Old Faithful Bar & BBQ
This fresh-faced newcomer proves that bargain bites and high-end fashion can happily coexist in the same street. Here meat is cooked low and slow. By day, it’s all about lunch-hour-friendly sandwiches, while evenings see the kitchen go the whole hog – literally. And everything tastes that little bit better with something from the well-stocked bar.

Tak Chee House
Sure, you could hit this veteran restaurant for great Penang char kway teow. Its vegies, particularly anything fried with sambal, are also solid, ditto specials such as the weekend-only assam laksa. But everyone’s here for the great Hainanese chicken rices. While many like to go with the traditional poached chicken version, no one’s going to judge you (much) if you want to road-test one of the fried iterations. An institution.

BMT
Perth’s premier Vietnamese pork rolls are to be found on or around Marangaroo Drive, in particular, at a low-key shop dubbed BMT. Crunchy, creamy and unfailingly stuffed to overflowing, these $5 sandwiches are great value. They’re also so filling, that there’s scant need to supplement your order with some house-baked bánh patê sô (Vietnamese pork pies) – but that hasn’t stopped anyone before.

Suzie’s Prata House
Regulars at Thornlie’s Spencer Village will be aware that Suzie’s Prata House stall often sells out of its outstanding hand-pulled roti by early evening. Good thing, then, that Suzie Soesilowati has set up a second outpost north of the river. Weekend specials such as rojak, nasi lemak and other Singaporean hawker favourites make this essential dining.

Toastface Grillah
Toasted cheese sandwiches at nice prices? Can it be all so simple? The gang at Toastface Grillah are about getting that cheddar – or Emmental, or Gruyère – slipping it between bread and toasting ’til golden. Whether you keep things old-school with a ham and cheese toastie or splash out via the fancier likes of the Danny Zuccho (brie, zucchini and prosciutto), count on friendly service and cut-price coffee.

Hong Kong BBQ House
Where does one go for Perth’s best Chinese barbecue meat? For across-the-board excellence, Hong Kong BBQ House is the benchmark all other roasters are measured against. It’s hard to go past its wobbly roast pork (siu yook), although the glossy barbecued pork (char siu) and roast duck (siu ngaap) also have their fans. The takeaway jars of savoury house-made chilli oil are a mandatory add-on to any order.

Le Vietnam
In a short amount of time, Le Vietnam has established itself as the CBD’s bánh mì peddler of choice. Sure, keen pricing doesn’t hurt – this is one of those rare places where a tenner (or less) gets you a nutritious lunch and drink – but it’s the little things that leave the biggest impression on customers. Two cases in point: the homemade cha lua (Vietnamese ham) and truly cordial service. The cafe also serves French-Vietnamese “tapas” on selected evenings.

Arigataya
A growing number of restaurants are making their own noodles. Arigataya is a case in point. Springy of texture and richly flavoured of broth, the restaurant’s ramen is a valuable addition to Northbridge’s Asian food scene. As well as standard-issue soup ramens, Arigataya also serves tsukemen-style ramen where diners dip their noodles and accoutrements into bowls of deeply porky broth.

Di Chiera Brothers Continental Store
Not only are continental delis rich sources of tinned tomatoes, olive oil and fancy pasta, they are also custodians of that beloved lunchtime staple, the continental roll. The version served at this beloved corner store – four meats, lettuce, tomato and pickled eggplant stuffed into a crusty house-baked roll – rates as one of the best and, at just $9, is one heck of a deal.

Tuck Shop
There’s something incredibly comforting about a good pie, especially if it’s from this buzzy inner-city cafe. Entombed in golden crusty pastry and crammed with first-rate ingredients, they’re about as far from a tradie’s breakfast as you can get. On the run? Tuck Shop’s pies are available takeaway, and at $4 less than the dine-in price, too.
