Quizzes are not just a pastime for Brydon ‘The Shark’ Coverdale, they are a way of life.

But long before Coverdale was compiling the daily Brain Gain quiz in this paper or blowing minds on The Chase Australia, the country boy at heart was following another passion: cricket.

In line with the season, the former cricket journalist has gone back to his roots to devise the 40-question mega Brain Gains cricket quiz – in today’s paper and below.

“I was just one of those kids who loved playing cricket,” Coverdale said.

“I grew up in the country Victoria (Camperdown) and I was the youngest in my family. All the others moved away so I often found myself throwing the tennis ball against the wall and hitting it.

“I grew to love the game and when I became a journalist, I got to travel the world covering the Australian cricket team.”

When it comes to his quizzes, Coverdale covers mainly general knowledge but with the nature of cricket, he said it’s deserving of a dedicated quiz.

“Because a test match will go for five days, there’s a lot of time for your narrative to build and for discussions to form around different paths,” he said.

“With the mega quiz, there’ll be something for everyone, so if you only have a passing interest in the game, you should be able to still get a few right.

“But if you are a big cricket nerd, there’s also something in there that will challenge you.

“And hopefully you learn something interesting about the game or about the players or the people involved.”

If you’re new to quizzes, Coverdale recommends following your instincts.

“Generally, it’s always a pretty good rule to trust your gut instinct,” he said.

“If you if you see any question you think of an answer straight away, there’s probably a reason that you’ve thought of it.

“The other thing is, look at the little the little clues. If you actually look at the question a bit more carefully and realise you can rule something out because of the wording, you can sort of navigate your way through and narrow it down to take quite a quite a good guess at it.”
