Whether scrambled, baked or blitzed raw, the versatility of eggs is something to celebrate - and indeed it will be, on World Egg Day this Friday (October 8).

Now in its 25th year, the global festival of the beloved hen’s bounty started in Vienna, where eggs are the unsung hero of the iconic Wiener schnitzel. Along with its binding, whipping and thickening powers, the humble egg is a cracking source of 13 essential nutrients, vitamin B12, iron and iodine, which supports a healthy nervous system and glowing skin - plus, it’s simply delicious alongside toast soldiers.

A love of eggs is nothing new, with domesticated laying hens dating back as far as 7500BC. However, at a time of growing awareness around the environmental impact of our food choices, eggs are earning extra credit as the most sustainable and affordable animal protein around, recognised by the World Resources Institute as a low-impact protein source.

As preparations for World Egg Day whip into gear, cooking classes and egg peeling races are among the events honouring the shell-clad ingredient across the globe.

Deliveroo has joined the party, offering a selection of half-price egg dishes from restaurants nationwide. Search for World Egg Day through the app to see if there are any offers available near you. The International Egg Commission is encouraging people to participate from their home kitchen, by posting photos of their favourite egg dish under the hashtag #worldeggday.
