Australia’s issues with streakers laid bare by Javon’s Cbus sprint

A titanic contest between a woman and a security guard has struck at the heart of our complex, conflicted relationships with streakers.

The country has been captivated this week by an incident many deemed embarrassing but was, in fact, just part of the cut and thrust of public life — as well as a tough but fair contest between two quintessentially Australian opponents.

I speak of course of the titanic struggle between 28-year-old Gold Coast woman Javon Johanson — who displayed an expression of pure joy rarely seen in this nation since 2019 as she powered the length of Cbus Super Stadium in her smalls — and the security guard who spear-tackled her to the ground.

Not since the 1998 election debate have two opponents been so evenly matched — although if Johanson had been carrying a ball, the Titans might have actually won.

The incident has struck at the heart of Australia’s complex and conflicted relationship with the art of the streaker, namely that when a bloke does it it’s gross and annoying but when a chick does it it’s awesome.

And, of course, this raises awkward questions about the gender-indeterminate purple streaker who graced Brookvale Oval in 2015, the most awkward of them being can someone really be a streaker if they are covered head to toe in spandex?

But the best thing about it was just how incredibly gracious Johanson was in defeat, dismissing calls for the security guard to be disciplined.

“It’s fair play. I definitely took what I deserved. He should keep his job,” she said.

Johanson later explained her thinking to Triple M, proving her to be, in fact, a model of thoughtful consideration.

“You just hear this big roar and I was like, ‘I need to take off my top now.’ I was so close to doing my bra but I was like, ‘No … that’s a bit far’,” she said.

If only our politicians could be such models of restraint.

Frankly, it’s hard to believe she’s single — although to be fair she wasn’t until Saturday night.
