Model Emily Ratajkowski has revealed why divorce should be celebrated after her marriage with Sebastian Bear-McClard ended in 2022.
The former couple share one son, Sylvester Apollo Bear, who was born in 2021, and were married for four years.
The famous model has revealed in an upcoming issue ofAustralian Vogue that she’s refusing to see divorce as a failure.
Ratajkowski, 32, said that she doesn’t think there’s any danger in “glamorising” divorce and instead said we need to rethink how we feel about it.
“When you think about the weight of the taboo of divorce, to say, ‘No, it’s not bad — actually, maybe it’s cool,’” she argued.
Ratajkowski also explained that she found talking about her divorce helpful and was happy to be open and honest about it.
“Even just sharing parts of my experience with my divorce has been somewhat cathartic and also kind of nice, because I don’t want everybody to think that I’m some perfect person,” she told Vogue Australia.
Despite the fact Ratajkowski is outspoken in general, she has been tight-lipped about what caused her divorce.
She told The Los Angeles Times she hadn’t previously spoken publicly about her divorce because she wanted to focus on her young son.
“I’m learning that outspoken women don’t often get their children,” she said.
She also said on The Going Mental Podcast that breaking up with her husband was tough.
“I had just had a child, so I really wanted to have that family, so it was especially hard for me to totally walk away,” she said.
Despite the model never shying away from how difficult divorce can be, she’s also reclaiming what it means.
She previously called divorce “chic” on social media and added that it was a positive thing for her.
“For all those being stressed about being divorced, it’s good, and congratulations,” she said.
Just because Ratajkowski doesn’t think divorce is bad doesn’t mean it wasn’t hard for her.
She also explained in a podcast that she lost weight while her relationship was falling apart, and she was also a new mum.
“I had lost a tonne of weight after my son was born, and I could not regain the weight,” she said.
The model explained that dropping so many kilos was “alarming”, but because she was so anxious, she found it hard to eat healthily and regain the much-needed weight.
“I couldn’t enjoy food; it wasn’t about my body image. It was about my anxiety, and if I’m ever stressed, the first thing that happens is I stop eating. It’s just how my brain works,” she said.
Despite not feeling her best, she found being alarmingly skinny helpful in her model career.
“I started walking more shows. I was getting booked for things that I hadn’t booked for before,” she said.
Ultimately, she explained that she didn’t “like being that skinny,” but she admitted that her industry rewarded her for it, which she dubbed a “scary” reality.
