Taronga Zoo: Vote for long-nosed fur seal pup’s new name

She is already six weeks old but the first long-nosed fur seal born at Taronga Zoo in nearly 20 years needs a name — and you can help pick from three choices.

It was a plunge into the deep end but Taronga Zoo’s newest seal pup is taking to things swimmingly.

The long-nosed fur seal pup, now six weeks old, is in the midst of swimming lessons, with keepers helping her learn the ropes at Taronga’s Seal Bay exhibit.

Senior keeper Joe Altuna said the little girl – the first long-nosed fur seal born at the zoo in nearly 20 years – had taken to the water “wonderfully”.

“We started in knee-deep water and she followed straight in behind us,” he said.

“She’s already using her flipper. She’s coming into her own in the water extremely fast.

“The funny thing was, we found her sleeping and washing herself in her mum’s water bowl at just two weeks old, her instincts just seem to have taken over.”

The zoo has invited the public to vote on one of three names for the little pup: Birubi, Millicent or Eden.

“We’re really excited to see which name is picked for her … either way she’s super cute and we’re very excited to have her and watch her grow,” Mr Altuna said.
