JOVIAL thoroughbred trainer Mitch Beer enjoyed every moment of star greyhound Nangar Larry’s grand racing career.

Beer shared in the ownership group that raced the 28-time winner for the majority of his glorious career, an ownership group that included Melbourne Storm gun and Greyhounds As Pets ambassador Ryan Papenhuyzen.

But while Nangar Larry’s racetrack deeds brought Beer more fun and excitement than he could have ever imagined, it’s been in his first six weeks of retirement that he’s really made his mark, with the former Bulli Cup winner now calling Beer’s Kembla residence home.

“He was the first dog I ever owned and he took us on a great ride,” Beer reflected.

“Each and every week he turned up and produced his best and gave us as owners some great moments.

“It’ll be hard, if not impossible, to get another one like him.”

As Nangar Larry’s career began drawing to a close, his owners started to discuss finding him his “forever home” in retirement.

“A text went around and I thought ‘yep, that’s got my name written all over it’,” Beer said with a laugh.

“I’d had a German Shepherd that passed away probably a month earlier from old age and to be honest getting another dog wasn’t on the radar at all but I’m so glad I did.

“You’re never 100 per cent sure how it’s going to go but he’s fitted in amazing.

“He’s got the run of the place here now.

“He spends most of his time laying on my bed and around the stables he is fantastic as well.

“But he’s no fan of the 3am alarm going off, when I get up for work he barely moves a muscle.”

“For anyone thinking of taking the plunge and adopting a greyhound I couldn’t speak more highly of it.

“He’s got a home here for life.”

Prospective adopters will get the chance to learn more about greyhound adoption when Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) stage a massive weekend of events on April 26 and 27 to celebrate Greyhound National Adoption Day.

An event in Sydney will be staged in the Entertainment Quarter of Moore Park while regional events will be staged at Bathurst, Lake Macquarie, Wagga and Tamworth.

And if Beer decides on a companion for Larry, he can head to Petstock at Kembla Grange on Saturday, April 26 where GAP will also be hosting an Adoption Day event.

“One’s enough, for now anyway,” Beer joked.

“You never say never.”
