GREYHOUNDS As Pets is celebrating Adopt a Senior Pet Month by reducing its fees to just $100 for dogs seven years and over.

And anyone searching for a character reference on the joys of adopting a senior greyhound need look no further than St Leonards based Yulia Bystrova.

It was in June last year in the throes of lockdown that Yulia adopted 12-year-old greyhound Greyson and the pair haven’t looked back.

“He’s my superstar - just a beautiful, kind loving companion,” Yulia beamed.

“Greyson is my first pet and I must admit before adopting him I did have misconceptions about greyhounds.

“You see them so big and strong and you question how they can be cuddly and caring as a pet but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

“Greyson fitted into the family instantly and is the perfect pet. In many ways, especially during lockdown, he was my saviour.”

It was on the advice of husband Christian that Yulia made the journey out to Londonderry last year to attend a Greyhounds As Pets Open Day.

“I fell in love with Greyson straight away,” she added.

“A lot of the attention was going to the younger greyhounds up for adoption but my mindset was that the older dogs, this time Greyson, deserved his forever home as much as the other dogs.

“He’s so low maintenance we haven’t changed our lifestyle at all but he’s changed ours - for the better. Our two walks a day is great for my wellbeing and I’d recommend adopting an older greyhound to anyone.

“It’s great walking around our area now and seeing so many greyhounds in the pet population. And it’s great for Greyson too.”
