SHOCKING footage has emerged of a toddler hanging off the edge of the fifth-floor balcony of a high-rise apartment block, while his mother slept.

SHOCKING footage has emerged of a toddler hanging off the edge of the fifth-floor balcony of a high-rise apartment block, while his mother slept.

The boy from the Brazilian coastal town of Vila Velha was first spotted by passers-by below him, who started to cry out for someone to notice and help him from above, Midia Con News reports.

Bruno Teixeira, a witness who saw the boy from below, immediately made his way into the apartment building and brought the boy back on to safe ground.

Scary moment ... the young toddler dangling on the edge of the balcony in Brazil.

“When we saw the boy hanging we ran without looking ...,” Mr Teixeira said.

“When we arrived at the apartment the room door was open and the balcony was closed. (The boy’s) mother was asleep. She should be more responsible with her son’s life.”

The footage has made its way on to YouTube, and a waiter working nearby also told Midia Con News that customers were “crying at the sight”.

All alone ... passers-by cried out for someone to help the young boy.

A police investigation is still under way into the incident. How the boy got to the edge of the balcony is still unknown.

The frightening footage comes after footage recently surfaced of a man catching a baby who fell from a second storey window in China.

It also comes after a baby in India was filmed walking perilously up and down a window ledge on the outside of a high-rise apartment building.

The baby was first seen walking out on to the window ledge of the building, which was more than nine-storeys high.
