Baby names 2017: Games of Thrones and Royals a popular choice
IT’S one of the most popular shows on television and now a name inspired by Game of Thrones has shot up the list of NSW’s most favoured children’s names. And the royals have also been linked to the comeback of George and Charlotte.

IT’S one of the most popular shows on television and now a name inspired by Game of Thrones has shot up the list of NSW’s most favoured children’s names.
Aria soared to be 23 according to the NSW Registry of Births Death and Marriages “Popular Baby Names” list to be released today.
The name is linked to the fantasy epic Game of Thrones character Arya Stark.
In 2010 no babies named Aria appeared in the top 100 names. The name debuted in 2012, and in 2017 there were 211 babies named Aria.
Debuting last year into the top 100 names for girls was Luna, Millie and Clara.
Zoe and Ella also appeared in the top 10, pushing out Emily and Ruby.
Charlotte, the name of William and Kate’s daughter, has made a regally inspired leap to the top of the list, bumping out Olivia.
While Oliver topped the list of most popular boys’ names for the fourth consecutive year, George — last popular in 1910 — has soared the charts to make the top 30, along with other royal boys’ names Harry, Henry and William.
The royals have also been linked to the comeback of Charlotte, with the girls name bumping out Olivia to top the name charts.
There were 209 babies named George last year — almost double since 2009 when it languished in 74th position.
The other big chart-climber was Henry, which moved into the top 5 from 18th position the year before.
Attorney-General, Mark Speakman, a keen royal watcher, said: “With a Royal wedding on the way, maybe Meghan’s mark will be made this year.
“An increasing number of parents are just wild about Harry as well as the longer form of the name, Harrison, which has climbed two places to 14th.”

Debuting into the top 100 for boys were Bodhi, Leon and Nixon.
Australian actor Teresa Palmer has a four-year-old son Bodhi, while Chrissy Tegan and John Legend have a two-year-old daughter, Luna.
Not starting trends are political leaders, with no babies named Malcolm, Gladys or Donald in NSW last year.
Bill has also has fallen out of favour, with more girls now taking the name in the form of Billie.
Only Biblical name Luke carried on in the top 100.
Mr Speakman said the baby name list provides an insight into NSW communities, with names such as Muhammad (59th), Ali (66th) and Ibrahim (98th) reflecting the State’s cultural diversity.
It is free to register a newborn’s name, so long as it is done within 60 days.
