Parents left horrified after baby formula error

The formula company has since changed its dosage advice, apologising in an email.

A family has claimed their baby boy fell ill after using plant-based formula, with the company admitting they had incorrectly labelled the dosage.

The Aussie family, who have chosen to remain anonymous, told 7NEWS how their son became ill just weeks after being on the Coco2 Infant Formula.

The $42 formula is described on the company website as a “clean, coconut-based option” for babies with “milk protein allergies or sensitive tummies”.

The father said they became concerned when their son turned seven months old, and began missing key milestones.

“He wasn’t sitting up,” the father said.

“By February he just started to go downhill, just quite lethargic, lost all his colour, lost weight.

“His lips started to crack. He was rashing all around his nose and eyes and so we just went to the GP and he suggested some blood tests.”

The family eventually admitted the child to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.

“We had the results saying it doesn’t look like it’s a blood cancer, but there’s something going on, but we don’t know what it is,” the dad said.

The family switched his formula, and the boy’s condition improved almost immediately.

“We don’t think there’s any long-term issues,” the father said.

The formula company has since admitted to the incorrect dosaging being labelled on the size of the can.

In an email to customers, Coco2 blamed an error with the scoop size.

“We’re reaching out with an important update regarding the Coco2 Baby Formula batch you purchased,” the email said.

“Due to natural variations in bulk density, we discovered that the included scoop holds slightly less powder than usual.”

The company said parents should double the amount of powder.

“This adjustment is simply to ensure that your baby receives the proper serving size and all the nutrients they need,” the company said.

“We sincerely apologise for any confusion or inconvenience this may have caused.”
