Justine couldn’t wait for her sister’s wedding, but when discussing childhood memories with the groom, she accidentally took things a step too far.

Woman shares nightmare wedding story

Most people would admit to having a few skeletons in their closet they may want to keep buried from a romantic partner.

If the time comes and you’re ready to spill on your past, 'fessing up can be a huge weight off your shoulders and bring you closer as a couple, or it can erode a relationship that may have taken years to develop.

So when Justine* accidentally revealed her sister's secret without her knowledge, it threatened to shake the foundation their relationship was built on.

“My sister told me I ruined their wedding and honeymoon”

Justine and her two older sisters, 30-year-old Hannah*,  and 27yo Laura*, were always very close growing up, the two eldest playing a huge role in her childhood.

“They were both wild and so, from a young age, I knew a lot more than I was supposed to,” Justine wrote on Reddit

As a kid, Justine was exposed to the “partying” and “dating” her sisters used to partake in, but it was “nothing weird or scandalous, really”.

As the years passed, the sisters’ “wild” behaviour settled down, hitting the town a little less frequently and both settling down into relationships.

Laura got married four years earlier to a man named Jake*, who was fully aware of her past.

“He knows about her partying, drinking and pretty much everything else she did and he never had a problem with any of it,” Justine wrote.

Naturally, Justine “assumed” her eldest sister was equally as honest about her past with her fiance, Mark*, who she was planning to marry in the coming months.

“I've met Mark only a handful of times since they live far away and so I assumed they talked about it all,” Justine said.

Fast forward to Hannah and Mark’s rehearsal dinner, and the groom, Laura and Justine “started sharing interesting stories from our childhood”.

“Mark asked me how come I've never dated, drank or partied,” Justine recalled. “I, not even thinking it might be a big deal, said that after hearing all the stories from my older sisters, never really wanted to or felt the need to.”

Mark suddenly “looked a bit confused” by what he’d heard, “but said nothing”. Instead, her older sister “glared” at her. It wasn’t until Justine was pulled to the side by her sister that she learned the truth: Hannah hadn’t told Mark about anything about her “wild days”.

After apologising to her eldest sister for accidentally revealing her big secret, Hannah told her it “wasn't a big deal”.

Two months after the wedding, Justine had completely forgotten about spilling her sister’s secret with her brother-in-law. After all, Hannah said it wasn’t a big deal, so she could just let it slide.

Well, that’s what Justine thought, anyway.

While popping over for a family catch-up, the couple’s energy seemed a bit off.

“Mark was as nice as ever, while Hannah was a bit standoffish,” Justine said.

It wasn’t until Mark left the roof that the two eldest sisters “ganged up” on their little sister, and “told me Mark was mad at Hanah for lying and that I ruined their wedding and honeymoon.”

Justine felt her heart drop to her stomach, but after a round of bickering from her two eldest sisters, their mum walked in and “chewed out my sisters for blaming me for Hannah’s lies”.

Even though her mum had her back, Justine “started feeling anxious and bad about what happened and the part I played in it”.

But in their mother’s eyes, Hannah and Laura were the ones in the wrong. Even their dad got involved, telling Justine he would “make my sisters apologise” for their behaviour.

“They realised they were both idiots”

It turns out that all they needed was to sit down and talk things out. Big surprise!

A day after the awkward spat, the three sisters sat down and explained the entire dilemma.

“Turns out my BIL was upset she didn't tell him everything,” Justine said. “But he got over it quickly. He didn't mention anything for almost two months because he thought Hannah was upset with herself and the situation, so he didn't want to make it worse.”

In response, Hannah began to worry that he “was upset with her, so she didn't want to make the situation worse than it already was”.

“So, basically, the wedding and honeymoon were ‘ruined’ because they had an awful case of worrying about the other one and walking on eggshells around one another,” Justine said.

Now they sorted the entire drama, and both concluded they were “both idiots”, the couple decided to organise a “re-do” of their honeymoon at a later date.

I love happy endings!
