‘My adopted son saw his baby photo for the first time and his reaction made me cry’

“We adopted him when he was two years old, and we hardly have any photos of him from his life before he came to our family,” the mum reveals.

The NSW Adoption Process in 7 easy steps.

As the adage goes, kids say the darndest things.

Sometimes they’re funny, sometimes they’re super weird, and sometimes they’re so raw and disarming, they bring tears to your eyes.

Sasha’s* four-year-old son David is adopted, and they have a lot of big conversations about a lot of serious topics.

Lately there have been questions about babies.

Sasha and her husband adopted David when he was two, and their daughter when she was three, but sadly there aren’t many baby photos of the kids.

“We are very open about adoption and during our conversation he mentioned his baby cousin (my nephew) and says, ‘How come I was never small like him?’.”

Sasha knew this would be an emotional conversation.

“I explained to him that he was. I asked him if he wanted to see his baby photo and he sprinted to the couch. Just the sheer happiness.”

Mum shows adopted son baby photo

When David saw his baby photo, he was overwhelmed.

“I’ve never seen myself as a baby before,” he told his mum.

Sasha was almost in tears. “I tried not to cry in front of him,” she said.

The comments were full of people commending Sasha for her honest approach with her adopted kids.

“I’m so glad you’re open about adoption,” said one person. “I have a friend who didn’t find out until it was blurted out by an angry sibling at a family wedding when he was 27.”

“My cousin is 50 and everyone in the family knows but her,” said another. “It’s the family secret. I tried to hint about 20 years ago that she should ask for more information about her early childhood and I was banished from the family. One day I guess she’ll learn the truth and that everyone she loves lied to her.”

Other parents shared how they talked about babyhood to their biological children.

“We have one of my daughter’s newborn photos framed on a shelf in her room and she knows it’s her baby picture,” said one mum. “She two now and every once in a while before she goes to bed she says, ‘Night, night baby’ to the picture.”
