There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that midwives are life savers for pregnant people.

In times of stress, pain and discomfort, they’re there to help. Thanks to their endless studying and education, they are prepared for every possible outcome during labour

But sometimes, the births that get taught in textbooks aren’t the same that midwives face on a daily basis.

Midwives share the hilarious reality of delivering babies

“Midwives do it in any position”

In the hilarious 21-second clip, American midwife and self-decribed "baby catcher" Amanda slides under the legs of a pregnant woman, smiling and giving the thumbs up.

“Midwives do it in any position,” the TikTok caption read.

One of the first birthing styles the midwives experience is the “six-finger catch”. She can be seen putting on her gloves before the baby unexpectedly comes out earlier than expected.

With half her gloves on, the midwife catches the baby using six fingers - three on each hand.

Midwives perform the “bed catch” and “ejection reflex catch” during labour

Next was the “under the bed catch”, where the midwife lies on the ground and grabs the baby as the pregnant mum gives birth at the edge of the bed.

Viewers can appreciate how much midwives go through thanks to the next clip - the “wandering foot.”

The nurse, who is busy helping the birthing woman, is met with a foot on her face, slowly inching towards her mouth and stroking her chin. Confused but unfussed, the midwife continued as if nothing was happening.

The clip also showed the “tug of war” and the “bed catch”, where the mum gave birth while the midwife turned her back, pretending to be overjoyed after seeing the infant.

Finally, the clip showed the “ejection reflex” catch - the medical professional walked through the door as a baby began flying towards her. With a shocked look on her face and cat-like reflexes, she lunged forward to catch the baby.

“You do you,” the caption read. “We’ll do it all with a smile, too.”

“Thank goodness the midwife caught my baby”

Nurses flocked to the comments to share their unusual delivery experiences.

“Don’t forget jumping in the tub!” a fellow midwife wrote. “The over-the-toilet catch!” lagged another.

“As an L&D nurse, I’m a big fan of the bed catch,” read a comment. “One time, I had a mama standing while delivering, and the midwife and myself each caught baby with one hand a piece,” said another.

Parents shared their appreciation for midwives as well.

“I had a leg cramp mid-contraction and kicked my poor midwife in the face,” a woman laughed. “I felt so bad afterwards.”

“Mine came flying out, he nearly hit his head on the side of the birthing pool,” another recalled. “Thank goodness [the] midwife caught him.”
