I was mum-shamed for letting my 3yo daughter do something 'disgusting'

"I don't agree with what you did, but that's still an unhinged thing for a stranger to say."

Mum says she was 'parent shamed' for getting her kid's ears pierced

A woman took to TikTok to share her emotional experience after getting publicly mum-shamed for allowing her three-year-old daughter to have her ears pierced at a shopping centre.

The mum, Hannah Odend’hal, took to her account to share a video of her crying in her car immediately after the incident.

She said that while she was in the jewelry shop getting her toddler's ears pierced, her daughter let out a small cry (shocker!) and a passerby used that as an opportunity to let the mum know she disapproved of what she was "putting her daughter through."

"Disgusting excuse for a mother"

"I just got told that I’m a disgusting mother and that they hope that somebody holds me down and does painful things to me because I had Lennox’s ears pierced," Hannah said in tears.

"This woman literally walks up to me in the middle of everybody and told me that I’m a disgusting excuse for a mother and that she really hopes that somebody holds me down and does painful, awful things to me like I just did to my daughter and that I just taught her that anybody can do those things to her."

The woman's comments left the mum shocked and completely lost for words.

"I don't even know what to say. So, to the lady who said that, my daughter thinks I'm a great mother. What you didn't see is that she asked for those earrings for weeks, and she was smiling afterwards," she explained.

She also mentioned that the store workers came to comfort her and her daughter after the uncomfortable exchange.

"So, you're a disgusting excuse for a human and the world needs less people like you in it. And to all the people over there that treated me and my daughter like gold after that, it encouraged me.

"We need more people like them in the world because stop shaming people because they don't agree with you. Stop shaming people, people. That was so wrong and not needed."'

"Ignore their ignorance"

People's opinions were mixed in the comments. However, one thing was clear—no one agreed with the woman's rude approach.

"I had my daughter's ears pierced at six months. Don't listen to people," one said.

"I'm sorry someone was so cruel. Ignore their ignorance," a second assured.

Another admitted, "Personally, I don’t agree with it. But that hardly makes you a bad mother. Keep doing great."

"I waited until my daughter could tell me she wanted them pierced. She was five and did amazing. I never understood why parents pierce a baby’s ears. It’s their little body, let them decide," another replied.

"I wouldn't go so far as to say you're a bad mum," began someone else, "but going to a professional piercer is definitely the way to go. Keep your head up, this too shall pass. Love to you and your daughter."

The mum added that she used the encounter as a teachable moment for her toddler: "I got myself together and taught my daughter a lesson from this experience. Words are powerful and can really hurt people! Stop shaming people for living life differently than you!"
