'I fixed it': Clueless Grandma has babysitting privileges revoked

"My daughter cried afterwards: 'I don't want to look like a boy!'"

A grandma has given her six-year-old granddaughter an impromptu haircut, without the parents’ permission.

 

Now, she’s had her babysitting privileges revoked. 

The woman's son explained: “Last weekend, my mum, who we will refer to as "Karen" from now on, offered to babysit Lily so my wife and I could have a date night. When we got back, I was shocked to see that Lily’s beautiful hair had been cut into a short, chin-length bob."

He added, “My mum proudly said she needed to look 'more mature' and that she fixed it."

"Karen defended herself, saying it’s just hair and it will grow back”

The frustrated dad shared the story in a Reddit forum, hoping for advice.

“When I asked her why the f**k  would a six-year-old need to look 'more mature' all I got was a blank stare.

“My wife was furious and asked Karen why she thought this was okay. Karen defended herself, saying it’s just hair and it will grow back.”

But for both his wife and daughter, it wasn’t “just hair." It was their special bond.

“They do hair masks, try out different braids, and Lily loves showing off her princess curls,” the dad shared. 

“Lily was devastated. She kept saying she didn't want to look like a boy and cried for hours.”

The parents decided the only way forward was to set a firmer boundary.

“I told her that she had no right to make that decision and that I no longer trusted her to watch Lily unsupervised. Karen was livid, accusing me of overreacting and punishing her over a haircut,” the dad revealed.

“She insists she was just trying to help and says I'm being disrespectful by taking her grandparent rights away.”

Commenters on the post expressed outrage over the grandmother’s behaviour. 

“Your mum should know better. You NEVER cut a child's hair or make a change to their appearance without parental approval,” the top comment read. 

“She assaulted a six year old little girl and is completely unrepentant. She's the kind of person who gives kids things they're allergic to on purpose,” another fumed.

A third bluntly added: “She has NO grandparent rights.”

The father says he feels completely lost, especially as other family members have taken his mother’s side. 

“My sister thinks I’m being harsh, saying Karen was probably overwhelmed and trying to manage Lily’s hair," he said. 

“Lily is still heartbroken and I don’t know how to fix the damage.”
