An influencer has been slammed online after posting a series of photos taken of her standing with her baby close to a balcony ledge in Paris.
Camila Coelho, who has almost 10 million Instagram followers, was met with backlash after sharing the pictures of her with her seven-month-old son Kai.
The 35-year-old is shown posing with one arm supporting her son, who is perched on the railing of Paris’s Hôtel Plaza Athénée.
“Kai’s first time in Paris,” Coelho captioned the post. “So happy to be back for PFW [Paris Fashion Week] and spend my birthday tomorrow here with him and hubby!”
But rather than marvel at the backdrop of Coelho’s picture, thousands of her fans instead expressed concern at her son’s seemingly precarious position.
“When you care more about the Eiffel Tower being in the shot than your child’s safety,” one person commented. “Influencing at all costs.”
“Babies and balconies don’t go together. It takes a second for an accident to happen. It’s not worth the risk or picture,” another said.
“Please avoid holding the baby so close to the ledge no matter how careful we are. It’s just unexplainably dangerous,” a third wrote.
“How far can you go for likes? Yes you are in Paris and yes, you have a view. No need to put a baby on the edge of a balcony. In some countries I think you can be accused of neglecting your baby. Please stop monetising pics with your child!” another commented, while someone else wrote: “Kids are not accessories.”
Coelho didn’t respond to the critics – but did seemingly double down, posting photos and videos in the following days with her son in the exact same position.
In one clip, uploaded six days later, she held her son in one arm while leaning over the balcony’s edge, holding a drink in her other hand.
“This is now the second time that you come into the picture with Kai on the edge [of the] balcony. Seems so dangerous to me as a mother!” one person commented.
“Not only foolish holding a child over the edge of a balcony but using your other hand to hold a cup of tea, that your child was trying to take from you moving around in your one arm: There are so many ways this could have gone wrong,” another said.
“Oh dear, not again. So irresponsible to take a baby so close to the edge of a balcony. @camilacoelho You are an absolute style icon, but you need to take some level of personal responsibility for your actions as a social media influencer, knowing that others may copy you,” a third wrote.
Several fans likened the act to the late pop star Michael Jackson, who in 2002 dangled his then-infant son Blanket over the edge of a balcony at the Adlon Hotel in Berlin. In response to the outrage, Jackson issued an apology.
