Umbrellas up!
I’ve got a cute idea for a rainy day project that only involves paper, straw, tape and scissors. We’re going to make miniature umbrellas.
The kids can make these umbrellas to decorate their cups, or use as a doll accessory. If you make enough of these umbrellas they can be used as party bunting or bedroom wall decoration.
What you need
• Paper• Bendable plastic straw• Pipe cleaner• Double-sided tape• Beads or small pom poms• Glue • Scissors

Paper circles
Draw and cut out ten paper circles, with an 8 cm diameter. You can use a roll of double-sided tape as a circle template.
The circles can be one or many different colours.
Paper folds
Fold each of the circles in half, and then half again. Each paper now looks like a quarter pie piece.
Double-sided tape
Open out the folded quarters like a book. Then, place a piece of double-sided tape near the top inside edge. Close the fold onto the tape. Add another piece of double-sided tape to the top outside edge of each folded quarter.
Stack and stick the ten folded paper pieces together.
Add a piece of double-sided tape to the spine of the joined folded quarters.

Straw
Shorten a bendable straw, cutting 2.5 cm off top end, and 5 cm off the bottom end.
Stretch out the straw hinge. Insert pipe cleaner into the entire straw, Cut off the excess pipe cleaner. Bend the hinge into a U-shape (the pipe cleaner helps to hold the shape).\
All together
Press the sticky spine of the folded stack to the top of the long straw shaft. Pull and stretch the folded paper quarters around the straw. Close the sides of the paper stacktogether with double-sided tape.
Optionally, glue a bead or small pom pom to the topmost point of the umbrella.
