Gold Coast man fined for surfing with pet snake

A Sydney woman has been reunited with her pet pythons after they were allegedly placed in a box and dumped in front of a home by an ex-partner.

The search for the 2.5m domesticated snakes, Mango (an albino python) and Bagel (a brown python), has been ongoing since October 21, after their 25-year-old owner issued a plea for help in a local Facebook group.

Ten days after the initial escape, Bagel was found on street in Coogee by a local and the owner retrieved Mango from a vet on Monday.

“I wanted to share the incredible news that, thanks to the outstanding support of the community and the diligent work of the local police and WIRES, my two precious pythons have been safely returned to me!” she wrote.

“I can’t express how grateful I am for the overwhelming response and assistance I received during this time. Your kindness, concern, and willingness to help were truly heartwarming.”

The day before, a sighting of the yellow snake was made on another Facebook page, with the owner alerted short time after.

“Snake of Kidman Street, Coogee. Tried shout out Bagel and Mango (sic) but no answer,” the post read.

“Please let the others know. In the process of trying to contact the snake rescuers.”

A 25-year-old man has been charged in relation to the incident in October.

Police allege he damaged two snake enclosures located at his home before placing the reptiles in an unsecured box on the footpath in front of his house, before they escaped.

He was later arrested and charged with two counts of destroying or damaging property

The charge carries a maximum prison term of 12 months, or a fine of $2200.

The matter is before the courts.
