Bunnings mums roast ‘terrifying’ $49 Christmas meerkat statue

A newly released addition to a cult collectable from the Australian hardware store has given shoppers more than they bargained for.

A Bunnings customer was given the shock of her life after purchasing an “adorable” Christmas ornament that delivered more festive cheer than she bargained for.

The WA woman purchased a $49 Christmas meerkat statue complete with solar powered LED lighting in its eyes and nose recently.

But after putting the item on display in her front yard, she was taken aback by how the limited-edition Bunnings item appeared when lit up at night.

“Thought it would be cute…. Daym Bunnings did me dirty,” she captioned two photos of the collectable item.

Members of the Bunnings Mums Australia Facebook group were quick to comment on the festive product, which is part of the hardware store’s continually expanding ornamental meerkat range, playfully commenting on its “creepy vibe”.

“Perfect for Halloween and Christmas!” one joked.

“That’s so funny. I want a whole yard of these staring into the souls of passers-by,” another teased.

Another laughed: “Oh gosh they did do you dirty. I was looking at these and telling my partner how cute it would look in my yard. This has determined that was a lie.”

However, some were convinced the statue was “evil” and “demonic” – telling the woman she needed to “burn it fast”.

“You summoned a meerkat!!” one said.

“Lol that’s so creepy,” another remarked, while another wrote: “Looks demonic!!”

Someone else added: “Well that’s slightly terrifying.”

As well as the meerkat in a reindeer onesie offering, Bunnings also have a meerkat holding a sausage with a set of tongs out on sale this summer – both of which are in stock.

Meerkat statues first became a popular item in 2020 when Woolworths released a range of 18 in an array of outfits that were “exceptionally popular”.

Not long after, Bunnings released its own line featuring solar panels and lights for the garden, with the statues developing a cult-following.
