Shock new No. 1 Aussie home design trend: Coastal Hues beats out Hamptons

Move aside Hamptons, this design style is what Aussie renovators and home builders want most right now.

Bold design in Hampton East

Aussies are keen to foster their at home relationship with the coast, no matter where they live as ‘Coastal Hues’ has emerged as the 2022 home design style of choice.

The relaxed, beachy vibe of ‘Coastal Hues’ has taken the place of the ever-popular Hamptons as Australian home designers favoured style.

According to Stockland’s new Dreamcatcher tool – which allows home ‘dreamers’ to discover via virtual 3D tours and guided videos as to how they might like their new home to look – more than a quarter of Aussies are aiming for a coastal take on their home.

That means “bright, open spaces, crisp white walls, warm timber flooring, natural jute, vibrant greenery and layer upon layer of organic linen”, according to Stockland.

“For the majority of Australians their home is their castle, and with the many frequent lockdowns over the past year, Australians have been investing more time and thought into their home environment than ever before,” Sophie Pickett-Heaps, Co-Head of Design at Stockland.

“As such, we’ve seen a great uptake of our new Dreamcatcher tool.

“What we are seeing from this tool is the strong desire for a more Coastal style of living, with its light and airy feel, earth tones, warm timber floors, reminiscent of long lazy afternoons by the beach.

“This has come out as the key favourite, truly epitomising the Australian lifestyle whether you live in Manly or Marsden Park.”

Of the almost 85,000 Australians who used the Dreamcatcher tool between August and January, 27 per cent leaned towards ‘Coastal Hues’ as their preferred design and style trend.

That was followed by Hamptons Retreat, which 24 per cent of users favoured.

That involved “Australians showcasing their love for cool whites, muted greys, ocean hues and warm timber,” according to Stockland.

“Think freshly painted cladding, plantation shutters and traditional wainscoting paired harmoniously with antique hardware, natural textures and raw linen.

The Urban Edit aesthetic was the third most popular option with renovation enthusiasts, with 19 per cent of users “favouring a lower maintenance style of living with surfaces that are easy to clean with lots of natural light.”

The Dreamcatcher tool also found that the kitchen was the room most prospective renovators were looking to update, followed by the living room and then those looking for bathroom or laundry inspiration.

In terms of palette preferences, the natural look of timbers was favourite, followed by white and then grey.
