ROBYN Jones was on maternity leave from her job in advertising when she learned the sad truth about the global rate of maternal death. One mother dies every minute during pregnancy and birth, and 98 per cent of those deaths are in developing countries.
Robyn saw an opportunity to help new mothers, like herself, by developing muslin baby wraps that would then fund birthing kits for women in developing countries with every purchase.
“I found a fair-trade certified manufacturer in India who would make our beautiful organic muslins, and established a partnership with Birthing Kit Foundation Australia, who provide clean birthing kits to women in more than 30 countries.
“So far, Mama Maya has funded more than 6000 birthing kits,” Robyn says.
While the business is helping expectant mothers overseas, Robyn is busy taking
care of her own young brood.
“We’ve lived here for almost two years. We started renting after we sold our last house, after a huge and exhausting renovation project, as we felt like we needed a break to focus on our family and our two small children. We came to see it and instantly knew it was the one we wanted to live in for the next little chapter of our lives,” says Robyn.
“The last two homes we have owned were double-storey homes, but I’ve always loved the ease of a single-storey home, and this was a big tick for me. I love the huge level backyard, which is perfect for a trampoline and for kids playing soccer, the brand new kitchen, and all the light. There are so many big beautiful doors and windows, the house is always so light.”
