Often it’s the small touches that make a home feel truly inviting and memorable. To create a stylish space, all you really need is imagination and some help from tradies.

When you’re designing a home, it’s easy to get carried away dreaming about pricey furniture, rugs and art.

But big-ticket items aren’t as important as they seem, and plunking down the money to buy them is no guarantee you’ll end up with a home you love.

Often it’s the small touches that make a space feel truly inviting and memorable.

Noelene Cason of Interiors by Cason said a fresh coat of paint on walls will immediately renew a room, and a change of colour can transform it.

Adding cushions and a throw in a bright colour to a couch can make a statement in a living room and you can do the same in a bedroom with minimal expense.

“The right colours and lighting are really important in transforming a space,” Ms Cason said.

Not every piece of furniture and accessory needs to be a showstopper. A single distinctive object can create a focal point and enhance the appearance of a larger space.

“Floor rugs will enhance the room and make it feel cosy,” Ms Cason said. “Artwork is great, but they should not be hung too high or dominate the wall space.”

Work with the artwork you already have. Take them down and lay them all out on the floor and look at them together. Just rehanging them in a way that is more uniform, or like a collage, can make the difference.

There are social distancing measures in place but interior designers are still able to lend a hand. People can still post jobs online through the hipages platform and tradies and professionals can continue to accept jobs.

ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS WHEN DEALING WITH TRADIES

– Greet your tradie at the door, but remain a safe distance as per the ‘social distance’ guidelines.

– Wave instead of shaking hands with your tradie.

– Offer your tradie the opportunity to wash their hands at the start and conclusion of the job.

– Upon completion of the job, use electronic payment options such as credit card, direct debit or through the hipages app (which is free of charge) to avoid handling cash.

– Respect the social distancing measures (1 person per 4 sq metre).
