'Shrinkflation' strikes Australian shoppers: The sneaky way companies are getting you to pay more for your groceries

A Sydney mum has ignited a heated debate on social media after she snapped up seven marked down roast chickens from Woolworths.

The thrifty shopper took to Facebook’s Markdown Addicts Australia page, sharing that she’d purchased the budget chooks for just $4.40, down from $11.

“No I didn’t buy them all. Yes I left some for others. Yes we eat a lot of chicken. No it won’t go to waste,” she wrote alongside a photo of her haul, referencing previous accusations in the group of shoppers “hogging” discounted goods.

Her post drew hundreds of likes and dozens of comments – and while some accused her of “rude” behaviour by buying so many chickens, other members in the group wrote that she shouldn’t have had to justify her purchase.

“Who cares if you did buy them all! You’re entitled to buy whatever you want. I would have bought a few, good score,” wrote one.

While another commented: “When I come across meat cheap I usually buy the lot. I don’t care what people think. I’m thinking ahead for my family, if they aren’t sold they get thrown out so great score no need to justify it to anyone as your money is as good as anyone else’s.”

One woman said that she “nearly got into a chicken fight” with a fellow shopper after taking more than one marked-down chicken.

“I nearly got into a chicken fight with a lady over getting two chickens on sale ($3.34 each) I brought one for my elderly neighbour who had a flu,” she recalled.

“She told me it’s rude to take more than one and that I was now making her kids starve for tea. When I told her to back the f**k up she demanded the manager take the chicken away from me – he didn’t.”

The post comes after another group member was dubbed “selfish” and “greedy” for purchasing “every single packet” of marked down salmon and trout at her local grocery store.

“Imagine being that selfish. How embarrassing,” one woman commented under a photo of the woman’s trolley, which showed dozens of packages of fish reduced from $11 to just $1.10.

Another agreed, remarking: “Certainly some greedy people around these days.”

“Yes good price, but wouldn’t it be nice to leave some for someone else?” wrote a third.
