A “disgusting” image featuring two dogs snapped in supermarket trolleys has sparked fierce debate among shoppers.

Two dogs wandered into a Woolworths store in Ballina, NSW, without their owner, stunning both shoppers and staff members as the animals roamed freely.

The pets were “tearing past” people as they did their grocery shopping, which was a terrifying sight to many, given the large breed of dogs, Kidspot reported.

A photo was shared online of the two Staffies sitting happily in two separate trolleys after staff members seemingly contained them.

Despite no harm occurring, people were still outraged about how the incident was handled, with many expressing concern about the hygiene of putting dogs in shopping trolleys.

“Hope those two trolleys got a good cleaning before being used again,” said one concerned viewer.

However, many commended the staff for managing to contain them so well.

“I would much rather use a trolley after a dog has been in it than use a trolley after a putrid human,” one person hit out.

Eye-witnesses to the incident said it all happened very quickly.

“Haha I saw them making a mad dash through the fair,” one witness shared.

And another local wrote, “We were doing a shop in Woolies this morning [and] two staff members [were] in hot pursuit.

“They went up and down a few aisles before they were nabbed.”

According to the poster, the dog’s owner was nowhere to be seen and a ranger had been contacted to pick them up.

News.com.au contacted Woolworths for comment.

A spokesperson from the supermarket previously told Yahoo; “Customers who have a guide dog or registered companion pets are welcome in our stores. However, we do not allow for everyday pets or animals to enter our stores.”
