Woolies shocks shoppers with ‘new’ mud cake item

The supermarket giant clocked 1.4 million views on its latest TikTok after it revealed what plans it had for its beloved mud cake.

Woolies’ ‘new’ mud cake goes viral

Woolworths really had its shoppers convinced it was going to get rid of its ever-so popular mud cakes.

Liam Kirley, who runs the chain’s TikTok page, shared a very believable video explaining the cake was going be replaced with a “Spudcake” made from potatoes.

It was posted on April 1, clocking 1.4 million views — but not many people picked up on the date aka April Fool’s day, and begged the supermarket giant not to get rid the 20-year-old product.

“If you get rid of the mudcake I will cry,” one TikTok user wrote.

“I swear they better not it will destroy my love these cakes,” said another.

“What is going on in our world,” a third added.

In the clip, a very convincing Liam, often known for his hilarious clips, told viewers “we're saying goodbye to Mud Cakes”.

“Mud Cakes are a quintessential Woolworths product taking pride in our stores for the past 20 years that’s why we’re very excited to announce the iconic mud cakes will be getting an update to serve us for the next 20 years and beyond.”

Liam them showed off the “new” Spudcake.

“In our efforts to create a more health-conscious lens to our own branded products, the spud cake – made of potatoes – will still be covered in our signature chocolate ganache but piped with potato for the signature top.”

He then concluded the clip by saying: “Don’t say Mud Cakes say Spudcakes, only at Woolworths.”

Liam’s acting skills together with the chain’s efforts to have a branded “spudcake” product, had followers fooled.

It wasn’t until later in the day Woolies actually fessed up in the comments section.

“Our chocolate mudcake is a beloved family favourite – and customers will be relieved to know it isn’t going anywhere,” a Woolies spokesperson told news.com.au.

“As is the April Fool’s tradition, the jig was up by midday and we came clean to customers in the comments section, letting them know it was all a joke.”

However, while some were furious at Woolies for even joking about it, others hoped for it to be real, with the clip slightly backfiring.

“I know you’re messing with me because it’s April Fools, but I still want this cake. Even if it’s just once,” one TikTok user said.

“Lowkey wanna try it tho,” said another, while a third confessed to having gone to their local Woolies store for it.

“Bro I legit went to Woolies to see if it was real,” they wrote.

“Same,” said another.

But the majority told the Woolies to “never play us like that again”.

“This. Is. NOT. Funny. I. Cried….” they wrote.

News.com.au can confirm Woolies has no plans to introduce the Spudcake as a new product.

“Our bakery teams are always innovating, and while a Spudcake isn’t on the menu we’re always looking for new flavours to delight our cake-loving customers,” a spokesperson said.
