Woman’s viral video after discovering hidden detail on carton of eggs

An inconspicuous detail on a carton of eggs has gone viral on TikTok after it caught the attention of a Victorian content creator.

Secret hidden on egg carton

A secret detail on the packaging of a popular brand of eggs has offered curious insight into the actual living conditions of “free range” chickens.

The hidden detail was spotted on the side of a carton of Manning Valley Free Range Eggs by Victorian content creator Celia Gercovich, who shared her discovery with TikTok on Wednesday.

Written inconspicuously on the carton is a message telling consumers that some of the chickens behind the farm’s eggs could be viewed online via a live webcam.

“This is amazing,” Ms Gercovich wrote of her find after locating the footage for herself.

Hundreds of chickens can be viewed mingling in a field at Manning Valley farm, on the NSW North Coast, via a link on the brand’s website.

Footage on Thursday showed some of the hens taking cover under a shelter, while others roamed through the grass and pecked occasionally at the ground.

The wholesome content, captured at one of the brand’s pasture-based, 2,500 hens per hectare farms, attracted viral attention after being shared online by Ms Gercovich.

More than 350,000 people viewed her clip in less than one day, with more than 800 people leaving a comment.

“I’ve legit just sat here for the last 25 minutes of my lunch break at work watching these chickens,” one woman said in a comment.

“If you can’t see what’s happening inside a farm they have something to hide, 100 per cent support this,” another said.

“What! And Aussie! Off to find this brand, worth it! Such a cool and appreciated marketing point,” a third wrote.

“This is such an awesome idea I hope more farms and companies decide to be so transparent,” someone else said.

Some were more sceptical however, and argued there may be other chickens subject to harsher conditions that what was shown on the webcam.

“Yeah except behind the camera are giant sheds with the other 400,000 chickens stuffed in, I guarantee it,” one said.

“Animal exploitation is still animal exploitation if there’s a webcam showing it,” another wrote.

“Almost all eggs are made unethically. I wonder how many are still inside the building,” someone else said.

Chickens can be viewed on the brand’s site from 10am until dusk daily when it’s suitable weather.
