A new generation of wine lovers is embracing wine in a can this summer.

Dan Murphy’s head of wine, George Radman, believes the time is right for canned wines to shine.

“Over the last year, we’ve seen significant growth of wine in a can in other markets including the US, where it is a small percentage of total wine sales but growing exponentially,” he said.

“Our customers have embraced wine in a can due to its convenience. These products are lighter, typically less expensive and more portable than bottled wine. Based on the growth of canned craft beer over the last few years we have already seen a huge shift in consumer attitudes, it’s now recognised that a can doesn’t mean compromising on quality.”

The convenience of the can is overriding the “snob factor’’, according to Irene Spokes of Barokes Wines, which has been canning wine since 2003.

The latest entrant to the sector, Rosè Rosè, is a carbonated canned rosè.

Tailored Beverage Group director Dylan Alexander said it came up with its own canning process and experimented with various blends and carbonation.

“There’s no metallic taste from the can but carbonation has changed the flavour a little bit. It takes out a bit of fruit so the wine we started with was quite sweet,” he said.

“It’s only slightly carbonated, somewhere between a champagne and moscato.”

Georgie Mitchell, 28, from Woollahra said yesterday she is happy to sip her wine from a can.

“I think it is the perfect summer drink, because it’s been carbonated and it stays cool and chilled in a can,” she said.

“It’s an easy, convenient drink to grab on the go and perfect for hot summer nights in Bondi.”
