SYDNEY’S annual winter festival, Vivid which starts tonight, shines a very bright light on the city, encouraging locals and tourists to get out and explore instead of rugging up and staying in.
Walking between the CBD, Circular Quay and Barangaroo, you will work up an appetite, so here are some of the best pit-stops with a view to revive you.
HARBOUR VIEWS
Northern Foyer, Sydney Opera House, until June 4
The Sydney Opera House is one of the key attractions of Vivid and you can refresh your tastebuds in-between peering up at its spectacular sails.
Goldie’s Music Hall is a pop-up bar from the teams behind Newtown’s The Midnight Special.
Channelling the funk of the 60s and 70s the Concert Hall Northern Foyer will be serving Sydney beers from Grifter Brewing Co and Young Henrys and wintry cocktails including the Golden Years, a mix of cognac, rye whiskey, amaretto, whisky barrel bitters and orange zest, plus a nostalgic menu comprising a reworked devon sandwich using LP’s mortadella.
Sculpture Terrace, MCA rooftop, 140 George St, The Rocks
From opening night tonight, the collaboration between MCA’s Artbar and Bombay Sapphire will run from 5pm-9pm for nine Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights.
In keeping with the theme, drinks will be served in LED-lit glasses and the bar will have its own light installations. The terrace is a great spot to take in all the other lights happening on the harbour and look down at the projections on the MCA facade by artist Jonny Niesche.
2 Henry Lawson Ave, McMahons Point
The quieter side of the harbour is where to get uninterrupted views of the Bridge. Make an evening of it and settle in for the light spectacular with a seven-course degustation.
Overseas Passenger Terminal, Circular Quay, June 8-10
Street culture mixes with street food, artisan desserts and live music. Indulge your sweet tooth with dishes from Koi Dessert Bar, doughnut cones from Hungary Bites, glow in the dark fairy floss Fluffy Crunch and more.
117 Macquarie St, City
Located 32 storeys skyward, the Supper Club gives you a bird’s-eye view of the action. The 117 Vivid package, $129, includes a three-course meal at 117 Dining then you’ll take the lift up for a cocktail with 270-degree views of the harbour.

The neon-inspired menu includes three colourful cocktails; Electric Blue, Orange Glow and Red Night plus a trio of neon dips; beetroot hummus, kalamata tapenade, rocket and
spinach pesto.
1 Olympic Dr, Milsons Point
Situated beneath the Harbour Bridge, this gives you prime views across to the Opera House and is offering a two or three-course Vivid menu for $55 or $70. Pre-book and get free parking. Luna Park is part of the Vivid precinct for the first time and will illuminate the ferris wheel with 3429 bulbs, making it Vivid’s first rideable activation.
CAFE SYDNEY
Sydney Customs House, 31 Alfred St, City
The facade of Customs House will be transformed by The Complete Works of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie installation, so it’s fitting it has created The Snugglepot, a cocktail showcasing Australian native flavours and producers. Sip on the mix of Archie Rose vodka, Applewood limoncello, lemon myrtle leaves and finger lime, while taking in most of the harbourside lights from an elevated vantage point.
BARANGAROO
A Day in the Light will be an illuminated trail installation along Wulugul Walk.
There are lots of options if you want to stop and rest, such as butterfly pea flower tea that changes colour from blue to purple to pink with a squeeze of lemon at The Rabbit Hole, rainbow sliders at Untied and 12-Micron’s multi-coloured dessert, the Garden of Sweet Delights for the ultimate sugar rush.
CHATSWOOD
Light Market is a pop-up food market created from recycled materials and lit by lasers.
There will be about 20 stalls in Chatswood Mall, from the Middle Eastern menu of Zahra Grill to Mary’s burgers and the sweet treats of Black Star Pastry.
