IT may have been a rather unconventional endeavour to open a German/Czech/Hungarian/Polish restaurant over 20 years ago in what at the time was a vacant lot amid farmland, but true to his heritage stemming from Bohemia in what is now the Czech Republic, owner Allan Penicka saw that the alternative had appeal. Allan credits much of the success to the some lessons he learned while an apprentice in some rough and tumble pubs of eastern Europe — make it fast, and keep it simple. Fortunately, the pace has slowed but Allan’s kept the menu modest, the beer cold and included plenty of space for growing families. — 5 The Old Narellan Rd

HEADING out for dinner and a show takes on a new meaning when you cozy up to the bar and prepare for the culinary theatrics of a teppanyaki chef. Starting with a flash of flames from the smoking hot grill followed by some fancy knife work, you’ll be disappointed when the show is done. That is, until you get a taste of the seared meats and vegetables and realise it’s as full of flavour as it was fun. Whether teppanyaki or salmon, head chef and sake master Hideaki Fukada will pair it with the perfect rice wine. — Shop 302, Narellan Town Centre Forecourt, 326 Camden Valley Way

WHILE some may prefer what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, Toni and Matt couldn’t wait to share their story of temptation. On a whim they queued up to try a new dessert and fell in love with the sinfully delicious frozen custard, a smooth, egg-based treat. They worked with dairy farmers to produce a dense consistency where mix-ins such as broken Tim Tams, nuts and strawberries are folded in rather the blended. — Shop 2/4 Sharman Close

THE dark woods reminiscent of the hotel’s 1880s origins have been switched out for bright whites and natural greens but, while the decor may have changed, the Narellan Hotel’s dining area is still the town hub. There’s the Sunday roast special and $15 steak night, but some flair has been introduced to the menu with the 12-hour, slow roasted beef burger and fish tacos. Be sure to order the candy coloured macaroon ice cream sandwich. — 279 Camden Valley Way
