Jo and Willy’s Depot

FOR mum Heather and son Clint Turland, Depot is more than just food — it’s a way for them to bring a bit of the Southern Highlands to the city. There’s the comfortable rustic interior and the herbs they’ve grown out at their home in Bowral, but it’s the good old-fashioned country hospitality that makes it a standout. Everything here is about patrons, or what seems more appropriate, their guests. There are regulars who have set orders, such as Steve’s breakfast — chopped tomatoes and scrambled eggs — plus a few diners who serve as taste-testers. Don’t miss the Peas Please, mushy peas blended with a creamy cheese sauce on toast with a poached egg. They are as good as they sound. And if you arrive at just the right time, you might land yourself a sumptuous free piece of fish that Clint caught spearfishing off the rocks at North Bondi. — 286 Campbell Pde

Nio and Tony’s

TONY Tsakirios and his brother Nio pooled their savings soon after arriving in Australia in 1976. The Greek brothers bought a small fruit shop. Hard to imagine now, but the most exotic thing at the time was an avocado. Tony said he didn’t know what it was much less how to eat it, but then, neither did his customers. But he learned adding some salt and lemon was a tasty option so he shared that seasoning tip with his customers. Nio and Tony’s is more than just a fruit shop nowadays, they’ve expanded to groceries, but wander in and you’ll more than likely stumble across a local or two who have stopped to socialise. — 294A Campbell Pde

Shuk

SHUK in Hebrew means market place, says Yoni Kalfus. So it’s little surprise he and Israeli co-owners Ariel Hefer and Erez Beker surfed into the name after forging a friendship on the waves of Bondi. Little did they know in the salt and sand 10 years ago that they’d be running a popular cafe. It started out as a bakery, then a deli and evolving into a great place to eat brekkie, lunch and dinner. The menu is a mix of traditional Israeli dishes but also includes a variety of other influences from Italian-trained Argentinian chef German Sanchez. Dine there often enough and there’s a chance you may even influence the menu yourself just as one regular who liked pancakes served with fruit but preferred bananas and bacon. Now everyone else does too. — 2 Mitchell St

The Coffee Dispensary

A cheesesteak to a Philadelphian is a meat pie with sauce to an Aussie. There are some things you don’t mess around with but, fortunately, Richard Raban and wife Bozena Todt are on very safe ground. Their tasty version has been given the stamp of approval from our friends across the ditch. Hard to imagine considering Richard went from being an IT lecturer to owning a pharmacy as a retirement project followed by an associated café as another project … that sells Philly Cheesesteaks. Other favourites include The Doctor’s Breakfast, and Superman - fruit, muesli and yogurt in a coconut. — 83 Murriverie Road, North Bondi

Paradise Road

ROAD trips are the makings for many an epic story, but for American author Jack Kerouac, a drive across the US in the late 1940s was the inspiration for the nomadic character Sal Paradise. And reminiscent of a US diner is Paradise Road. Co-owners David Owen and Gaudi Diaz have gone retro with their menu and the interior. Try the cowboy burger (created by a real Texas cowboy) and the fried chicken with waffles and maple syrup. — 296 Campbell Pde

NORTH Bondi RSL could easily ride the waves of success with their beachside location alone, but they have upped the ante with what is arguably one of the best schnitzels in the eastern suburbs.
