13 of the best Greek restaurants in Sydney

From tender meats cooked over hot coals to mouth-watering gyros and addictive sweets, Sydney is no slacker when it comes to Greek food, and these 13 eateries are among the best in town.

Cronulla's favourite Greek cafe

Whether you’re settling in for a big fat Greek feast or going the casual route with gyros and meat plates, Greek food is never a bad decision. Sydney has the pick of the bunch for the next time you want to take your tastebuds for a trip.

HAM

3/17 Gerrale St, Cronulla

HAM (an acronym for Harry and Mario Kapoulas) opened 12 years but recently renovated and gave the menu a shake up with a strong Greek flair to honour their heritage.

Mum Kitty works in the kitchen and dad Peter goes to the market several times a week to buy fruit and veg. The family recommend the Yeeros-chicken or lamb souvlaki with lettuce, tomato, onion, tzatziki and paprika; the Ancient breakfast-spiced tomato with labneh, soft-boiled egg, chilli oil and lemon on a soft Greek pita or for a dish that feels like a big warm hug, try Kitty‘s Ham-made moussaka.

MEDUSA GREEK TAVERNA

2 Market St, Sydney

A meal at Medusa has the ability to transport you to Greece, which is exactly what everyone needs during these trying times. Close your eyes and imagine as you stick your fork into a succulent hunk of NSW New England lamb shoulder while being waited on with traditional Greek service.

Diethnes

Greek Restaurant and Cocktail Bar

336 Pitt St, Sydney

Open since 1952, Diethnes is a Sydney icon. For so many people it is much more than just a Greek restaurant and many a famous – and infamous – diner has had a seat at those tables. The spanakopita, lamb souvlaki, lamb shoulder and moussaka are crowd favourites.

AVLI CRANEBROOK

540A Cranebrook Rd, Cranebrook

It’s hard to pick the best thing about Avli – the leafy, backyard setting, the family run feel, the extensive drinks list or the authentic Greek fare. They have your Greek classics but then a selection of dishes special to Avli – the lamb pie in puff pastry or try the goat shoulder baked in paper and marinated in graviera, thyme and gravy.

3 OLIVES

365 King St, Newtown

Many diners say their favourite thing about 3 Olives is Olga, the smiling lady boss who greets everyone on entry with grandmotherly service. But a close second is the large servings of authentic Greek food from the barbecue octopus with balsamic drizzle and saganaki prawns tossed in salsa, feta and garlic.

BILLY THE GREEK

2/506 Old Northern Rd, Dural

Long-time favourite restaurant Billy the Greek showcases its Mediterranean cuisine, serving everything from chargrilled octopus to moussaka and cocktails, with great flair.

TWISTED OLIVE

684 Bourke St, Surry Hills

It’s not unusual for diners to go back for consecutive meals after discovering this Bourke Street beauty. Unpretentious and packed with flavour, dishes are inexplicably addictive including the Mezze Platter with beetroot hummus and kafteri dip, oregano Kalamata olives, grilled haloumi and grilled pita bread and loaded chips with feta, oregano and olive oil.

YIAMAS GREEK TAVERNA

1/1-5 Princes Hwy, St Peters

While Yiamas offer everything Greek your heart and stomach could desire, their specialty is tender meat cooked over hot coals. With a great range of pork souvlakia and kondosouvli meat, as well as lamb, pork, chicken and even quail it’s a carnivores dream.

STIX AND PITA

Shop 3, 216 Enmore Rd, Enmore

The guys at Stix and Pita make everything they can themselves – including fresh daily pita and decadent desserts. They proudly state that all ingredients are sustainable and sourced from local businesses with premium juicy pork supplied by Bruemar and pasture fed Dorset lamb from the lush Riverina. The biggest issue is choosing one thing off the menu.

LOUKOUMADES GREEK STREET

481 King Georges Rd, Beverly Hills

A slightly different take on Greek cuisine, Loukoumades is named after the addictive ball shaped Greek doughnuts that originate in ancient Greece. Served classic with cinnamon and honey or kitted out with a range of chocolate, Nutella, strawberries, pistachio and more it is no wonder they have a dedicated cult following. They will soon add to their Beverly Hills store with a Randwick location.

THE YEEROS SHOP

431 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville

This spot has a reputation that extends far beyond Marrickville, although it is a local institution. The brand has been established since 1968 and still pride themselves as a family run venue with mouth-watering gyros that has customers travelling from far and wide. Also, their hot chips are often referred to as a contender for the best in Sydney.

KOUZINA GRECO

16 Phillip St, Parramatta

Lovers of Greek food go here for the Clay Pot Moussaka and home made taramasalata and end up staying for the Greek Coffee Tiramisu. A beloved gem in Parramatta, not many people only go once.

HOUSE OF GRK

Shop 2/98 Henry St, Penrith

The first thing anyone notices when entering House of GRK is the delicious aroma of roasting meats. No matter how you have them – on a generous open plate, in a salad, in a fluffy gyros pita or in one of House of GRK’s famous Greek burgers – diners rave about their flavour and tenderness.
