Crispy air fryer chow mein with Mongolian chicken

Our air fryer dreams truly came true when we tried it!

The air fryer phenomenon has taken Australia by storm, with searches for air fryer recipes increasing and everyone from your teenage cousin to your ancient Aunt Mildred buying one of these trendy appliances.

What’s all the fuss about? Well, air fryers operate similar to a very small oven – but they can cook food in as little as half the time due to the temperature control and airflow technology. They also make food extra crispy, without the need for as much oil as when you shallow or deep fry… so they’re a healthier choice too.

When we recently checked out the nation’s best air fryers to buy, we discovered that there’s a new (to us, anyway) type of air fryer on the kitchen block: a steam air fryer. Needless to say, we got pretty excited.

What is a steam air fryer?

The appliance in question that we discovered is the Tefal Easy Fry Grill & Steam XXL Air Fryer. It’s a generous 6.5L appliance which can cook food for up to 8 people.

Although it can steam and air fry, it sadly doesn’t do the two at the same time (the moisture would counteract the super crisp technology of the air fryer, obvs). The air fry setting of this appliance claims to have “the perfect balance of temperature control and hot air flow combine for crispy, golden results with little to no added oil”.

It also has a unique steam function, which means that you can cook a roast chicken and potatoes in this nifty appliance and then quickly steam your veggies as the chook and spuds rest. But it’s not just for quick steamed greens: the water tank has a 1.1L capacity, allowing for up to 85 minutes of steaming (hello, dumplings, fish and more!)

Oh – and it can “BBQ” too. The cast aluminium grill plate apparently guarantees meat and veg as juicy and tender as if they’ve been cooked on coals… without the smoke and smell.

It can cook food for up to eight people.

We tried the Tefal steam air fryer… and here’s our verdict

This is the air fryer to end all air fryers. This air fryer not only has the typical air fry mode but it also steams and grills – basically it’s a certified TRIPLE THREAT.

When taste.com.au’s Food Director Michelle and Senior Food Editor Elisa tried out this 3-in-1 air fryer they were truly blown away. You can whip up an entire meal using this bad boy: cook veggies using the steam function, grill steak in six minutes thanks to the grill function and make crispy salmon in 12 minutes using the air fry function.

And if this Tefal appliance couldn’t get any better, it also has 7 automatic programs (fries, nuggets, dessert, vegetables, chicken, roasted meat, fish) for added ease. Michelle and Elisa prepared a crumble, pressed the dessert function and in no time at all the smell of freshly baked crumble was wafting through the test kitchen.

Michelle and Elisa can conclude that this air fryer is perfect for families and entertainers. They also said: “If you’re looking for an all-in-one appliance and want to cook up a storm in a flash, plus enjoy heaps of preset features, then look no further.”

The air fryer that makes a whole roast dinner (including the gravy!)

When we say this air fryer does everything, we mean it. We roasted a whole chook and veggies in this air fryer and were welcomed to the perfect Sunday roast (or every night roast – it’s that easy).

And, what’s a roast dinner without gravy? All thanks to the steam function, you can make an easy gravy in 15 minutes. All that’s needed is warm water, chicken stock powder, cornflour, thyme leaves and the jus left from roasting the chook for extra flavourrrr.
