An internet-goer has been left shocked after realising what the metal part on the handles of scissors are actually used for.
In a thread called ‘Does Anyone Know’ on Reddit, an anonymous user shared a photo of a common pair of kitchen scissors and asked the community: “Does anyone know what this part of the scissors is for?”
Then within minutes, hundreds of people flooded the post, letting the person known they’re called ‘kitchen shears’ and weighing in with their answers.
One of the most common uses was cracking nuts, like a nut cracker, and to open bottle tops.
“I always thought they were nut crackers,” said one comment.
“For taking off tight bottle caps and stubborn lids on jars,” said a second. “Just put it around the cap of a bottle and squeeze – the teeth will bite in to grip while the scissors give you more leverage to turn.”
One user said they are sometimes called ‘bone-notch’ or ‘serration grip’ and can be used for everything from breaking meat bones to removing raised wine corks.
“I’m a chef and they are meant for taking the bones out of the meat. People say they’re nutcrackers, but you grab the meat and you put the bone in between those metal things, twist and pull the bone out,” someone else replied.
Additionally, people said they can be used for cutting string or twine.
Others said they were for cracking open lobster, crab or other crustacean shells.
The suggestions kept coming in, with others including “removing the tops of boiled eggs”, and “to cut foil”.
Other commenters insisted they were for de-stemming fresh herbs, making them easier to use in cooking.
“I assumed they were for stripping herbs,” said one Redditor.
Readers were stunned by all the various answers, with one saying, “What the hell, you’ve all changed my life!” said one.
“Seem to be multipurpose. Thanks to everyone who answered. Solved,” said another.
“I always thought they were just for cracking open nuts but now I’m going to try everything everyone suggests. I’m invested,” revealed a final user.
