Finding a decent breakfast for under $10 in Australia can be quite the challenge, but if you’re in Queensland and willing to make a trip to your nearest Ikea, you might be in luck.

The popular Swedish furniture store offers not only its famous meatballs and flatpack furniture but also affordable breakfasts in its onsite cafeterias.

Brisbane foodie Jaden Tyson Laing recently shared this little-known secret on TikTok, praising the breakfasts at Ikea for being just $2.

Available only at both Queensland stores (Ikea North Lakes and Ikea Logan), the breakfast offering is on sale everyday at the Swedish Restaurant until 11am.

An Ikea spokesperson told news.com.au it is part of its “commitment to affordability – not just when it comes to the furniture at Ikea”.

“We are dedicated to providing the most affordable meals to our customers who we know love a pit stop for our quality, delicious food offering and uniquely Swedish flavours when having a day out shopping in store at Ikea”.

Mr Laing visited the cafeteria with a friend to test out the cheap menu and made sure they got bang for their buck by ordering up a storm.

They bought two $2 “small” breakfasts, which are typically priced at $4 each. However, they are discounted to half-price for members of Ikea’s free rewards program, Ikea Family.

Each small breakfast includes two pork sausages, scrambled eggs, and baked beans.

They also ordered 10 “medium” breakfasts for $5 each, normally $7 without the member discount.

The medium breakfast includes two pork sausages, bacon, a hash brown, scrambled eggs, tomato, and baked beans.

The staff served up their meal from bain-marie trays full of breakfast items and the friends used the specially designed trolleys to bring their multiple plates back to their table.

When they spread all the plates out, they were amazed at the amount of food they had managed to buy for just $64.

“This is amazing,” Mr Laing said. “This has to be the cheapest breakfast in Australia right now!”

The menu also includes a $10 large breakfast, which features double sausages and double bacon, as well as plenty of vegetarian options.

Customers can also build their own breakfast with options like tomato, hash browns, bread rolls, veggie sausage, pork sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, vegetable medallions, baked beans, and mushrooms.

Commenters on the video were equally as impressed, with many saying they “needed” to try it.

Reactions included, “That’s awesome!” and “No way!”

One user pointed out that it was a great option given the current cost of living, while another praised Ikea for being one of the few companies still focused on “customers rather than profit”.

Someone also noted that for the same price of $64, you could only get about three to four meals at McDonald’s, and another compared the Ikea cafeteria to an “all-you-can-eat” buffet because of its affordable prices.

For those in other states worried about missing out on bargains like this – Ikea Family members shopping at all 10 stores across the country can still get half-price on selected hot meals for lunch or dinner on Fridays.

Other users on social media have also posted about the “great value deal”.

The cost of living continues to rise in Australia, particularly in areas like food, rent, electricity, petrol, and coffee.

Recent data from Finder shows that staple grocery prices have surged, with the cost of bread rising by 2.1% and eggs by 10.7% between October 2023 and October 2024, meaning that making brunch at home is also becoming more expensive.

In New South Wales, residents spend an average of $212 per week on groceries, followed by Victoria ($210), Western Australia ($209), and Queensland ($200).

Eating out is no less expensive, with Australians spending an average of $230 a month on dining out and fast food, according to Harigon.

Dayjob reports that the average price of a meal at an inexpensive restaurant ranges from $15 to $25.
