Mint genius!

Arnott’s recently released its list of Australia’s highest ranked chocolate bikkies (after the Tim Tam, which will never lose its position as #1 in Aussies’ hearts).

I was so happy to see my favourite, Mint Slice, in the top spot. After years of fiercely defending the mighty Mint Slice to all those Tim Tam fanatics out there, I finally felt my love for them had been justified.

But what if I told you that there’s a way to eat Mint Slices that may just take them from good to GOLD?

The Mint Slice hack I use every time

When I was a kid, my mum would buy a packet of Mint Slices every Friday during the weekly shop. My sister and I would race to find them in the shopping bag so that we could be the one to pop them where they belonged…

In the freezer!

We’d let them sit there for 3-4 hours and enjoy a couple after dinner – forming the perfect sweet treat!

Why freeze your Mint Slices?

Aside from the choc-mint spell Australia always seems to be under (see: choc-mint desserts we’re enjoying this winter), Mint Slice has led the dessert trends at taste.com.au for many years now (and many of these desserts were of the frozen kind, and many of the desserts we saw were frozen!

Take this Mint Slice cocktail, for instance. We’ve all heard of a Tim Tam slam (dunking your TimTam into a hot drink and sipping it through the top, like a straw), but what about a Mint Slice splice? Try dunking a frozen Mint Slice into this inspired adults-only cocktail for an evening spent entertaining.

Plus, who doesn’t love choc-mint ice-cream? Adding a packet of chopped Mint Slice biscuits to ice-cream creates a cookies-and-cream-like texture, just with a mintier flavour.

When you freeze Mint Slices, the chocolate and the mint-cream filling hardens (no sticky fingers here!), making them a refreshing sweet treat that can be enjoyed any time of year.

Just make sure to eat them quickly, before they start to melt. All done? Simply pop them back in the freezer and enjoy them again later.

I asked the taste.com.au team to try out my mum’s Mint Slice hack and our friends over at ABR posted the verdict:

@hungerhacks Trying this genius hack with Tim Tams as we speak. #foodhacks #arnottsbiscuits #mintslice #aussietok ♬ Sun – Good Grief

As my mum says, “that’s the only way to eat them!”.
