Sydney Eat Street: What to eat at the Royal Easter Show

THE Sydney Royal Easter Show offers a wonderland of amazing, astounding and downright crazy food to keep everyone’s tastebuds salivating for more. Here’s what it has to offer this year.

FLUFFY CRUNCH

START with fairy floss, sprinkle it with rainbow dust, top that with Froot Loops, two scoops of ice cream and you’ve got yourself a fantastical “Flurrito”.

It’s a cross between “fluffy” and “burrito” and it tastes as good as it sounds. This magical treat came about after Michael Karamallis left the corporate world with the intention of opening a cafe with his wife Paola, but instead they hit the markets spinning cones of fairy floss.

After a bit of experimenting with the delicate product, Michael and Paola created the charming Fairy Floss Bouquet, a generous amount of spun sugar topped with unicorn tears disguised as edible sparkled and popping candy, then served in a large paper cone to keep it “fluffy”.

They’ve also introduced a gourmet line of flavoured fairy floss that includes Salted Caramel, Apple Pie and Crushed Cookies and as these treats are served in resealable airtight you can have our fill at the show then nibble the rest the whole way home.

FOOD ON A STICK

SERIOUSLY, what food DOESN’T fit on a stick? Come showtime, everything is fair game and every year the creations get more extreme.

Where once it was the Dagwood Dog that got top billing, plenty of other foods have been skewered since, including chips, cheese, waffles and corn with the latest additions being frozen cheesecake, deep-fried lasagne and mac and cheese.

DISTRICT EXHIBITS

THE notion of farm to table gets literal on a large scale at the District Exhibits as five regions — four from NSW and one from Southeast QLD — put their produce on display with stunning mosaic murals and sculptures.

It’s a fierce competition for the participants but for everyone else, it’s just exciting to see the detailed designs year after year.

“It’s about creating memories,” Murray Wilton, general manager of Agriculture & Sydney Royal Easter Show, says.

The exhibits, which are made up of over 50,0000 pieces of produce, are judged on the quality of that produce as well as overall aesthetics. Best of all though, is you can buy fruit, vegetables and nuts from the respective exhibitors each day for a pretty good deal. The cut pieces of pineapples from Southeast Queensland are a must.

THE STABLES RESTAURANT

IT MAY be at the show, but that doesn’t mean lunch or dinner has to taste like show food.

So, once you’ve pushed your teenagers into Side Show Alley, head to The Stables Restaurant for a grown-up experience.

John Girgenti has turned this spacious upstairs loft into a modern Italian restaurant with a menu that features some of the Show’s award-winning products as ingredients.

Francesco Totaro, original owner of acclaimed La Rustica, has come in to oversee the kitchen as they prepare such scrumptious meals as Seafood Linguini, Gnocchi, and Pappardelle, all of which are made with the renowned Peppe’s Pasta.

You’ll also find King Island Dairy cheeses that go beautifully with Andrews Meats’ prosciutto, a gold medal winner in 2017.

WOOLWORTHS FRESH FOOD DOME

IT’S where the fresh food is, people. The Woolworths Fresh Food Dome is the first landmark building at the Royal Easter Show and practically serves as a portal to the decadent delights within its walls and beyond.

An ode to all things edible, here you’ll find some old favourites such as fresh oysters from De Costi Seafoods and meat pies from Mick.

Explore the stalls of boutique products ranging from chillies to cheesecake to find a new love.

After you’ve splurged on some treats, sit in on the Woolworths Kitchen’s Waste Less & Save More interactive session where chefs will show how to turn top wasted ingredients — bread, meat and fruit — into tasty meals and money in your pocket.

THE STABLES

WHILE the kids get their showbags loaded with treat, give yourself some joy with a visit to The Stables, an on-trend fine food and beverage destination.

Here you’ll find a bar stocked with the Show’s award-winning wines, ciders and beers, along with the Show Stopper, a brew that was made specifically for the Show by Modus Operandi using only NSW ingredients.

Enjoy a drink along with some of the true trendsetters on the casual food scene including Ballz meatballs, Burger Head, Gelato Messina as well as bites and deli platters from the Sydney Royal Corner, a stand that carries 16 of the shows award-wining products attendance under one million people at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions last year. Visit The Stables Restaurant — a menu with Royal Show award-winning products, Annie Makes Cakes, Gelato Messina, Burger Head and Balls (meatballs, that is!)

TASTE OF ITALY

A FOODIE trip around Italy may not be on the books in 2018 but you can pretend for the day at the Taste of Italy inside the Home & Lifestyle Pavilion.

Here you’ll find a delicious selection of food and drinks that have helped make Italian fare one of Australia’s favourite cuisines.

Try Vannella Cheese’s Scamorza Chips, deep fried polenta crumbed smoked mozzarella while watching the art of traditional cheese stretching.

Next door, order a margherita pizza baked in the on-site oven as well as some award-winning deli-delights including Bertocchi’s Antipasto In A Cup. Save room for dessert though as not only can you indulge in a crepe cone or waffle drizzled with Nutella but also when you purchase a 500g jar, you can have it personalised with your name on it. Buon Appetito!

DAIRY FARMERS

NO TRIP to the show is complete without a visit to the livestock and agriculture display; a highlight is always getting hands-on with the dairy cows.

It’s an interactive experience — a unique opportunity for kids that live in the city — to milk a cow, see that the milk in their Weetbix every morning doesn’t actually come from a bottle.

Once they’ve got that sorted, it’s time for smoothies and milkshakes, but it’ll take a bit a bit of work to get them. At the Dairy Farmers stand, hop on one of the bikes and you can mix your own milkshakes or smoothie using pedal power. There’s a choice of yoghurt or milk and fruit options — banana and mango leading the pack

FOOD TRUCK FEEDLOT

THERE’S a truckload of eateries parked up opposite The Stables in the Feed Lot with great collection of food trucks serving up a variety of different tastes.

Following on the popularity of specialised eats; some of the top picks on the scene have pulled in, including Mr Tortilla, Greek Street, Satay Bros, and The Hardstyle Kitchen with its slow cooker in tow.

There’s also the sweet favourite the StroopBros, cousins Troy Daniel and Alex Chaouka with their Stroopwafels, a Dutch dessert. They’ve recently added chocolate-chip cookie ice cream sandwiches, both of which will surely become a popular site over the 12 days.

GRAZE

AFTER the kids have had their “hands on the Land”, continue your farming journey with some grazing in The Daily Telegraph’s Paddock.

Fortunately, on this lot, there’s plenty of food options to keep even the choosiest camper happy. A new edition, not just to the Show, but also the West’s food scene is Pablitos delivering the tastes of Mexico in the form of jalapeños, chilli, meats and their house made guacamole, salsa.

While their food is casual, the experience behind the endeavour is anything but thanks to the extensive fine-dining wander over to Beyond India and dine alfresco on samosas, curries and pakora, along with ample gluten-free and vegetarian options. Greek Street — similarly to their food truck — is there along with Gelato Fresco’s fruity granita and gelato flavours of coconut, lemon and mango. If that’s not to your liking, visit for their fusion of paella with pad Thai.

MUST TRY

1. HOT DOG ON A STICK AND LEMONADE

Head to the iconic red and yellow trailers for a quality take on a Show classic combo — hot dog and cold drink. For over 45 years, they’ve been using a cornmeal batter rather than the tasteless flour and water version and use only fresh lemons to make their addictive old fashion lemonade.

2. GLUTEN-FREE DOUGHNUTS

Not only have they tipped the competition with their lovely and delicious doughnuts, cakes and cookies, but they’ve set the bar for tasty gluten-free and vegan foods. Try the award-winning rosewater and pistachio doughnut or the vegan blueberry cheesecake to taste for yourself.

3. AMERICAN BBQ

You can throw it on the grill for a feed or go Low-N-Slow — a low-heat, slow cooking style (12-14 hours) for tender flavourful meats such as their beef brisket and pulled pork. Look for the big ol’ Ford truck or just follow the smells of their custom made smokers.

4. CHEESECAKE ON A STICK

IT’s hard to improve on the rich creaminess of a really good cheesecake, unless of course, it’s covered in chocolate, frozen and then served on a stick.

5. PARMESAN CHEESE WHEEL

You could always ladle a cream sauce over your pasta but if you’re a true cheese lover, the only way to go is with the giant parmesan wheel — essentially a bowl made by scooping out the cheese in the centre then twirling hot pasta inside, melting the sides and leaving you with decadent cheesy spaghetti noodles.

6. GELATO DOUGHNUTS AND CROISSANTS

With so many delicious and inventive flavours of this premium gelato such as black sesame or the popular mint chocolate chip, you’ll want to try one at a time to savour the taste, but nothing says you have to do it straight up. Instead, have some fun with the servings and opt for a doughnut cone or brioche bun instead.

7. BIANCO SPAGHETTI BUN BURGER

When you marry the convenience of a burger with a delicious bowl of pasta Napoletana, the result is a clever creation of baked spaghetti noodles, classic meatball patties sandwiched between baked spaghetti noodle buns.

8. BUNS BUNNY

You’d be hopping mad if you missed out on these famous gelato flavours. Have it straight up in a cup or go with the season and try a scoop on a hot cross bun.

9. SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Sausage sizzle! Onions, tomato sauce, fresh bread. There is nothing more Aussie than a sausage sizzle and even better when it’s for a good cause. The $5 snag and water will be donated to regional farmers.

10. CWA SCONES

It’s not show time till you’ve had a cuppa and warm scone at the Country Women’s Association Tea Room. So if you’re checking the woodchopping timetable, mapping out the showbag hall or just want to ponder whether it’s jam before cream or cream before jam, this is the spot to be.
