ARCHIE ROSE DISTILLING CO

When it comes to Australia’s burgeoning boutique distillery scene, some players have been given kudos just for showing up.

But whisky, gin, vodka, and rum producer, Archie Rose Distilling Co have refined their game to become a real contender.

Yet, while their award-winning spirits are pretty much a staple on the shelves of Aussie bars, any mixologist will tell you that whether it’s a true connoisseur or the occasional imbiber, the winner comes down to personal preferences.

Get a taste of Darlinghurst’s dining scene

At Archie Rose’s set-up in Rosebery, give dad the opportunity to be as particular as he likes with a gin or whisky blending class where he gets to take home two 200ml bottles of his personal concoction.

For the gin aficionado, the session begins with some insight into the distilling process before guests are given tasting size portion of the base spirit, a selection of distillates, including eucalyptus and lemon myrtle then with a bit of guidance, go on to create their own concoction whereas with the whisky class its more about blending Archie Rose’s premium products to suit their personal palette.

If you’re looking to make his day more of a social affair, opt for one of their large mixed charcuterie boards loaded with various local meats, cheeses, Iggy’s sourdough bread and Pepe Saya butter along with a tasting flight or two.

Be sure to peruse their new menu — which features cocktails championing Australian ingredients such as the Myrtle Combat made with their signature gin, anise, pineapple and myrtle or the Home Amidst the Muntries made with Archie Rose Six Malt New Make, muntrie and eucalyptus.

Plus, as is appropriate for the day, Archie Rose will be launching the second batch of their limited edition whiskey, available only at their cellar door and online while supplies last.

On Father’s Day, the whisky tour cost $48 (tour, based on whiskey only)

THREE BLUE DUCKS

What started as a love of surf, sand and seasonal produce almost 10 years ago has led to Three Blue Ducks, which has grown from a compact Bronte cafe featuring ethical dining to a powerhouse of multi sprawling venues with their own kitchen gardens (and in Byron’s case, a whole farm) a number of cookbooks, a range of sauces, teas and chocolate cookbooks.

The team behind Three Blue Ducks has kept that original formula dishes that are hearty and classic but at the same time, clever and unexpected.

The Father’s Day menus will feature the likes of their famous black sausage for breakfast and for lunch, the option of charred herb salsa jus severed with roasted parsnips, fermented garlic and thyme honey and hazelnuts or the whole wood-roasted flathead, fermented chilli butter, curry leaf pangrattato.

“Being Dad’s day, we try and look after all the fathers out there by running specials which include large cuts of meat, Young Henrys beer and a free pair of socks for each and every dad,” chef and co-owner Andy Allen (winner of MasterChef 2012) says.

“It’s one of the busiest day’s at Rosebery throughout the year. The restaurant is pumping and has the most amazing vibe.”

ATELIER

You know dad would be fine with Sunday roast and a pint at the pub but why not spoil him silly with a day out at a chic restaurant by the water and head to Atelier at Sofitel Darling Harbour.

Here you can treat him to a premium cut of meat from gourmet butchers Victor Churchill and his own beer butler.

Though he may not normally be one to fuss, he’ll have to admit it’s bit of fun having a brew brought right to him on a posh copper trolley. He doesn’t necessarily need to know, but this bout of decadence isn’t a bank-breaker as Atelier is offering four lunch specials for $25.

MERCHANTS OF ULTIMO

While some prefer to stay out of the kitchen, there’s those that like to take the cooking into their own hands and not just out back at the grill flipping steaks and sipping beers.

So this Father’s Day, applaud his culinary skills with a special cooking class “How to make the perfect meat pie and sausage roll”.

Starting off with some light nibbles and a glass of beer or wine, in the span of two-and-a-half hours, Merchants of Ultimo’s head pastry chef Ali Pourvesal and Joy Events Organiser Soochen Low will walk you through the whole process.

Along the way, Ali will offer up some tricks of the trade plus dad can feel good knowing he’s helping out NSW farmers by using locally sourced fresh butter and drought relief flour. It’s a win all around.

TRAMSHEDS

For those facing a bout of indecision for Father’s Day, why not let him pick the place and head down to one of Sydney’s latest dining districts, Tramsheds in Forest Lodge.

Once the home of the Rozelle Tram Depot, this restored space now features 12 food operators that range from Bodega 1904, a Latin American-inspired restaurant offering tapas and wines from their onsite store to sweet treats at Gelato Messina.

Other options include Butcher and the Farmer where you’ll find their “love of food, the land and the vines” throughout the menu; southern-fried chicken from Belles Hot Chicken; Middle Eastern fare at Bekya; or plates of house-made pasta at Flour Eggs Water.

Beer-loving dads can head to Redline Kitchen and Tap House’s craft brews alongside jambalaya, hearty burgers, ribs and salads whereas the fisherman in him may be partial to the 100 per cent sustainably sourced seafood at Fish & Co.

If he needs a bit more time to think, hit up the weekly Growers Market before heading to Garcon where the next choice will be espresso or wine. Or both.
