MUM means the world to you so we’ve put together some loving food options that’ll help make sure that message gets through loud and clear on her special day.
1. KOI DINING
As the matriarch of the KOI family, you’d think Ike Malada’s three sons, Ronald, Arnold and Reynold Poernomo — otherwise known as the “Kids of Ike” or KOI for short — would want her to relax on Mother’s Day.
And you’d be right. They would indeed like to see her relax but that isn’t in her nature. Nor is it in theirs. They’re actually even busier, as this year they’re supplementing their renowned desserts and inaugural high tea offerings with a special Mother’s Day dining menu. For the main, Arnold has prepared steamed coral trout and king prawn with dashi cream, salmon roe and shellfish oil, a dish which Ronald thinks their mother will particularly enjoy. For dessert, Reynold diverts from traditional floral flavours to chocolate with an upright “Mille Tuile” (thin cookies) that are precariously balanced between roasted banana and hazelnut gel, chocolate crème, strawberry, salted caramel and honey tuile — all accented with blooms from their mother’s beloved gardens.

2. THE GANTRY
He’s been a finalist for Electrolux’s Young Chef of the Year award and recently appointed Head Chef at The Gantry but when it comes to cooking Thomas Gorringe still needs his mother’s approval. Sort of. Thomas explains that he and his mother have a similar palette, so when developing dishes such as the steamed Murray cod dish that is featured on the Mother’s Day menu, he often thinks to himself, “mum would like that” noting that after all, it was her who introduced him to those flavour combinations from the start.

3. ÉTÉ RESTAURANT
Between conflicting schedules and confusing diets, co-ordinating Mother’s Day lunch may have you running for the hills. Instead, gather the family and take in a bit of the French countryside down in Barangaroo. At Été, this sun-drenched restaurant with bleached woods, pale-tiled floors and handmade crockery has lovely informal warmth. The effortless set menu consists of share plates that feature seasonal and regionally sourced products, such as the succulent lamb shoulder from Mirrool Creek and autumn produce from the Blue Mountains. Once the charcuterie platters, ancient grains and vegetables get passed around, that’s when the sense of family returns, and as general manager Stephen Leahy says, “that’s when people once again get caught up in the lunch rather than the ritual of planning it”. All of which makes for a smooth transition to dessert, a trolley adorned with mini- sweats and treats.

4. PETAL MET SUGAR
She’s always been queen of the castle so this Mother’s Day, give her the sweet coronation she deserves with a flower crown workshop at Petal Met Sugar — a charming space where florist meets patisserie. While you’re fashioning floral headwear, enjoy a tasting of petite desserts such as lychee oolong tea cake and earl grey chocolate ganache-filled waffle cone. For those with less royal inclinations pre-order the Mother’s Day Breakfast Box which includes their signature vanilla bean croissant.

5. THE MORRISON BAR & OYSTER ROOM
Flowers are fine but for the mum who would gladly swap a dozen roses for a dozen oysters, The Morrison Bar & Oyster Room is your go-to spot this Mother’s Day. While the magnificent molluscs may have been the lure, the real treasures are buried a bit deeper in the menu where you’ll find dishes such as duck confit, chargrilled whole blue mackerel and grain fed pork chops cooked over coals. Book in for lunch or dinner and mum will receive a complimentary meal and glass of bubbles.

2. IKE’S ROSE
A rose by any other name is still a rose, unless it is an edible interpretation
with a poached pear frangipani tart base, rose champagne mousse, mix
berries with lemon baked cheesecake and strawberry ganache. That version
you can just call “delicious.”
- KOI Dessert Bar; Chippendale, Ryde
3. MOTHER OF PEARL
Get the cameras ready, as mum will be tickled pink when this striking dessert

4. PANNA COTTA
Choosing whether to stroll along Coogee Beach before or after dessert
should be mum’s toughest decision of the day as it’s just a given that the
strawberry coconut panna cotta with meringue and caramel shards will be
gracing the table come celebratory dessert time.

5. CHURROS ICE CREAM SANDWICH

modern Mexican dishes and a margarita spritz. Finish off with a scrumptious

should set in soon.
