While many restaurants and cafes closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown, many food businesses across Sydney and NSW are still open for takeaway and delivery.
Sydney Eat Street has created a list of food services still trading which we will continue to update during the shutdown.

HARTSYARD
The more things change, the more they the same and while Hartsyard has dabbled in different menus over the years – each to great success, the emphasis on quality and creativity has never wavered, nor has their insistence on the use of local suppliers.
Even in our current climate of instability, co-owners Jarrod Walsh, also the head chef, and Dorothy Lee have stayed true to that ethos using smaller suppliers and Australian produce.
Based on what’s market-fresh, Walsh changed the menu fortnightly.
“Just like we do in the restaurant,” Lee says.
Hartsyard favourites, such as the Westholm wagyu Rump Cap with pepper sauce and the BBQ Pork Jowl with tomato vinegar, black garlic sauce and fermented cucumber will still be available.
They’ve also added a special ‘family meal’ to their menu – a whole roasted chicken, three sides and a bottle of wine for $90 (serves four people) or a half a roasted chicken, two sides and a bottle of wine for $65 (serves two people).
Additionally, they’ve set up Hartsyard so it can trade as a bottle shop.
“The collection is quite extensive and changes regularly,” Lee says.
“We focused on small Australian producers only, because it’s the right thing to do.”

HOSPOMARKET
In these confusing times, it’s easy to say we’re all in it together, but for Graeme McCormack, CEO of Food Equity Group, he and his team have taken that declaration literally.
Working with struggling hospitality-centric and food service businesses in the northern Sydney suburbs, they’ve joined forces to create HospoMarket, an online marketplace and convenience store.
The initiative not only provides meals from local eateries including General Chao, Pishon Patisserie, Ya Malaysia and more, it also aims to retain staff from every aspect of the supply chain – from distributors and food servers to chefs and venue managers and even food photographers and creative agencies.
While the market itself could be viewed as a temporary fix to the current climate, Graeme sees it as much more: “Not only does it help them (local businesses) retain staff and ultimately survive during COVID-19, but to also provide them with an innovative new sales platform through which they continue to recover and grow after the current crisis is over.”
For now, the first venture is located in Chatswood where you can pick-up or arrange for delivery of such things as Panang curry from General Chao, a variety of pasta dishes from Stretch Italian, croissants from Steam Engine Cafe and even a selection of Tatler Wines as well as plenty of pantry staples ranging from bread and milk to coffee beans and smoothie packets.

MV PASTA BAR & LIQUOR
In tough times, there are the “glass half-empty” or “glass half-full” approaches, but to MV’s co-owner Aaron Le Sax, it’s the opportunity for people to fill it with cocktails and wine.
Here, the team has approached the situation head-on. Rather than emphasising MV Bistro and Wine’s limited menu, which sadly rules out the delicious porchetta and grilled prawns, they’ve embraced the situation with a DIY pasta menu, takeaway cocktails and temporarily changed their name to MV Pasta Bar & Liquor.
“We hope that having an affordable entry-level pasta range along with our favourites means we have a product to suit every budget while we are isolating ourselves,” co-owner Rhaad Forgarty says.
“Our regulars are picking up takeaway food, wine and cocktails to support us, (or perhaps it’s an excuse for them to get out of the house).”
Fortunately, their popular duck pappardelle, made with rich ragu of slow-cooked duck picked off the bone is still on the menu, or you can create something to your choosing.
You have a choice of five different types of pasta and five different sauces with bases ranging from spicy tomato to creamy mushroom.
Oh, and don’t forget a bottle from their broad wine list or opt for cocktails including Negroni, espresso martinis or their clever concoction, a Limoncello martini.
There is a 10 per cent discount on takeaways so diners can pick-up food at the front window. Delivery is through Bobble; free delivery within 4km of address for orders more than $75.

FAT ELEPHANT THAI
The tables at this restaurant would normally be filled with vibrant servings of jungle curry, grilled meats and steamed fish alongside bowls of rice, an abundance of sauces and of course, ramekins of chillies.
For now, though, the lovely hospitality at Fat Elephant will have to wait, but that doesn’t mean you still can’t gather the family around the kitchen table and enjoy tuck into some Thai takeaway.
“We’ve reached out to all our loyal customers and assured them we deliver their food without compromising on quality,” owner Mario Mourad says.
“Our ingredients are fresh and locally sourced, which also helps local producers and grocery markets. Nothing is frozen.”
Taste the freshness for yourself with dishes such as Crying Tiger – Scotch fillet with Thai Tamarind Sauce, lamb shank massaman curry or the whole steamed barramundi. One bite and you’ll already start planning a future visit to their Canterbury restaurant.

LA COPPOLA WOODFIRED PIZZERIA
This neighbourhood institution is proving it’s here to stay. They’re keeping the same hours and still making the same mouth-watering woodfired pizzas including the popular Zafferia pizzas made with burrata, spicy pancetta, mushrooms, garlic and olive oil.
“In all this weirdness there is beauty,” co-owner Stefano Scopelliti says.
“Our connections with people is more important than ever, and our interactions have more meaning.
“We still get to catch up for a moment and be that one outing they have where they see a familiar face.”
While it’s a bummer that you won’t be able to have a seat and watch him in action, La Coppola has tried to emulate the experience and now delivering beer and wine in collaboration with the bar across the street, The Noble Hops.
Stefano notes how grateful he is for the support from all the Redfern locals, something the team at La Coppola regularly mentions on their social media accounts and if time permits, a sincere little message on the pizza box itself.

THE TRAMSHED CAFE
For those in the mood for generous portions of modern Australian cafe classics, your next stop should be the shiny refurbished tram that stands regally out front of this cheery, family friendly cafe.
While your seat at one of the cheery lemon-yellow booths has been put on hold for a while, Lisa Arcus, co-owner of The Tramshed Cafe, is still dishing out positive vibes along with generous portions of their popular breakfast, brunch and lunch offerings.
“Cafes can still play a big role in helping our community stay healthy and nurture their bodies and souls through food,” Lisa says.
Tuck into one of their huge bacon and egg rolls, Brookie Beef Burger or the gluten free and vegan, Health Bowl. They also have a special Family Meal Deal which consists of any two adult meals and any two kids’ meals for $50.

MRS LIKS
Foodies will know the pedigree behind Mrs Liks, a new food delivery service with its eye on the greater Sydney area, as its origins hark back to the popular Potts Point South-East Asian influenced restaurant and cocktail bar, Jimmy Liks.
With their sights on a wider market, owners Justin and Kirsty Maloney opted to close up shop and take their fare on the road, developing a cult-following at Farmers Markets.
Now, though, they’ve hit the streets, bringing their premium quality food straight to your door.
On the menu there’ll be customer faves and some creations such as spaghetti Bolognese, made with a sauce that’s simmered for hours to absorb the flavour, or their punchy pesto.
To Justin and Kirsty, convenience doesn’t mean compromise: “Quality is paramount and having food cooked from scratch and filled with love is not negotiable.”
At the moment, delivery is limited to the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Northern Beaches and the Mosman/Cremorne Peninsula with more suburbs added every day.

FEZ & CO
Annandale locals already know Fez & Co as a haven for great coffee and fabulous food but to Fez & Co’s co-owner Suzanne Gehar it’s also “a place that brings people together”.
And just because she and her gregarious staff can’t bring their yummy mezze plates and rich tomato-based shakshuka to your table, you can still indulge in their falafels, Falafels, hummus Babaganoush Labneh Casseroles as well pulled-pork burgers and comforting soups.

OCEANS NARRABEEN
Closing out the weekend with a lazy afternoon out on the deck while enjoying live music, plates of buffalo wings and buckets of Coronas epitomises Sundays at Oceans Narrabeen and its beach culture.
But even though the streets have gone quiet and summer begins to fade, the team here aren’t ready to let go of the dream, serving up customer faves and weekly specials.
“We believe providing a sense of community and normalcy, in a time of uncertainty and isolation, is what will make the difference in coping with these drastic changes to our daily lives,” restaurant manager, Candance Beede, says.
“Whether it’s grabbing your morning coffee and having a chat with the barista or getting your favourite weekly dinner special to takeaway, we are here for you.”

FIRST DROP CAFE
Move away from the chaos of King St, toward the quieter and leafy laneway and you’ll come across the busy but relaxed First Drop Cafe.
For 13 years, they’ve been serving excellent coffee alongside a menu that features Modern Australian fare with a multicultural twist such as the Mediterranean omelette made with chorizo, cherry truss tomatoes, red onion, capsicum, olives and feta and Asian-inspired lunch items including roast duck roll, roast duck noodle salad and panko crumbed chicken sandwich.
It’s not just food that’s being dished out at this neighbourhood cafe, with co-owner Chris Hing saying how there is an element of camaraderie.
“Under these extremely difficult circumstances we all need to think of one another and be there for each other. The First Drop has been a part of the Redfern community since 2007 and we hope to continue to serve the community and all our incredible customers for many more.”
True to his word, First Drop Cafe has two $10 all-day specials: bacon & egg roll with a regular coffee or a smashed avocado & feta on sourdough. Additionally, all of their sandwiches and wraps are $10 and include a free bottle of still water.

ALIBI BAR & KITCHEN
Cuisine: Plant-based Modern Australian
In tough times, it’s normal to ease the angst with familiar comfort foods but that doesn’t mean it has to be deep-fried and calorie-laden.
At Alibi Bar & Kitchen, head chef Jordan Brogan has heeded the call for healthier options and developed a limited menu with tasty plant-based versions of filling faves.
Brogan has garnered quite the following for his uncanny ability to recreate meat-free options of everything from Christmas dinner with whipped potato, mushroom and walnut Wellington to high-tea desserts with black sesame “cream”.
So when locals started asking what he planned to plate up till they could next dine-in, Brogan went back into the kitchen and came up with five items that fit the bill: plant-based takes on American diner classics including Alt Meat Co hotdogs and burgers, Chick’N Waffles and even Mac & “Cheese” bites.
“The amount of support from our regulars has been amazing,” Brogan says.
“We understand and appreciate that it’s a difficult time for all, and Sydney choosing local, doing what they can to help out, it’s truly uplifting.”
The menu is available for takeaway and limited delivery but for an added incentive, orders over $30 include a free roll of the ever-elusive toilet paper.

STUYVESANT’S HOUSE
Cuisine: Traditional European
For nigh on 50 years, Sydneysiders have flocked to this northern Sydney establishment for traditional European fare and its gregarious hosts, handlebar-moustached brothers Rudi and Max Dietz.
They’ve watched as customers’ children grow up and gone on to bring their own kids into this lively place.
In these trying times, it’s this part that Rudi seems to miss the most.
“It’s sad not to have the atmosphere of the restaurant,” Rudi says.
“Three generations of a family that have been coming here for 40 years are now dining separately in isolation.”
But ever the optimist, even when Stuyvesant’s House nearly burned to the ground a few years ago, Rudi tips his hat to the loyalty of his customers.
“The community is strong and we appreciate everyone coming together to support each other.”
In the meantime, he’s developed a takeaway menu that offers 20 per cent off dine-in prices of customer favourites like chicken and veal schnitzels, Swiss Bratwurst and their signature roasted pork knuckle with Spaetzle and red cabbage.
“With generous portions and hospitality, we hope we can share this with people at home,” Rudi says.

MEAL KITS, GROCERY BOXES AND WINE
Necessity is the mother of invention. With every aspect of the hospitality industry currently in peril, it seems that almost every eatery is having to completely change the way it operates with some out-of-the-box thinking, or for others, literally inside the box.
While many restaurants have transitioned from dine-in to takeaway, others have turned to meal-delivery and grocery boxes.
Hatted restaurant, Sixpenny in Stanmore, has a weekly produce box ($120) filled with fruit, vegetables and kitchen items sourced from their community of growers and producers.
Neighbourhood cafes such as Salvage Specialty Coffee in Artarmon and Little Livi in Ultimo have pop-up grocery stands. And caterers, who have essentially seen their orders drop to nil have also had to change tactics.
Michael Vatalidis, manager at Essential Kitchen in Neutral Bay, says; “We shut down our sandwich production kitchen and converted it into a grocery store also selling a range of $12 ready-made meals”, such as beef bourguignon and linguine carbonara.
They also have a variety of food boxes including a Breakfast Fridge Box ($45), Fruit Box ($50) and Pantry Box ($45), all of which can be delivered free of charge, Sydney-wide with a minimum order of $20.
To round out the menu, don’t forget the wine. Cittavino in Newtown has put together the Bunker Box ($129), six bottles of Aussie wine.
Co-owner Simone Wyndham explains this package was released “to help small Aussie wine producers … who have been struggling since the bushfires earlier this year. We’re all in this together”.

CATALINA
Cuisine: Modern Australian seafood
This sleek, sun-drenched space with its stunning harbour view is an icon of the Sydney social set. Still, with everyone essentially relegated to anti-social status, it’s prime-time for Catalina’s refined fare to take centre stage.
Though the meticulously-placed freshly-shucked Sydney rock oysters and the roasted suckling pig with mango salsa and mustard seed jus won’t be gracefully brought to your waterfront table by Catalina’s graceful waitstaff, the same attention to detail is still imperative.
“We have designed a menu that includes old favourite dishes as well as new items that have been designed to travel well while still being recognised as Catalina dishes,” explains owner James McMahon.
“It’s a menu that reflects the things Catalina is known for: beautiful produce, handled with care, presented beautifully.”
And it’s not just the food that gets attention — there is also the pre-batched, single-serve cocktail in petite glass bottles.
“We want to offer isolated customers assured quality and fine-dining experience in their own home,” McMahon says.
“You can order aperitif cocktails to start, and a divine-three course meal, and wash it down with a bottle from our award-winning cellar.
“We want to deliver a personalised service that exceeds expectations and delivers the hallmarks we are known for – freshness, quality, and beautiful presentation.”
He also notes that the birthday club loyalty program — a free dessert with purchase over $100 for members in their birthday month — is still in place.
“Just because our lives have become smaller, doesn’t mean they can’t still be special.”

URBAN TADKA
Cuisine: North Indian
This expansive place with its dark woods and twinkling lights is surrounded by lush greenery and as intended, has a resort-style vibe; a lovely setting for this award-winning Indian Restaurant.
It’s been 10 years since owners Mandeep Rana, Inder Dua and Dimpy Kanwar first turned up the heat in Terrey Hills with the flavours of Northern India.
Here, the traditional dishes mixed with a touch of contemporary flair and Asian influences such as the spicy lychee infused scallops or the Schezwan crispy eggplant and chicken fillets along with cold lassi cocktails have helped make this place a hotspot for dinner with friends, date night or even a full-family outing.
“Over the last decade the community of Northern Sydney and beyond has been a great supporter of Urban Tadka and has filled our restaurant with so much laughter and joy,” co-owner Mandeep Rana says.
“Now it is time for us to give back, and hopefully fill their homes with a bit of laughter and joy … through the good honest comfort food that people have come to expect from us.”

KINX CAFE
There’s a universal dilemma that all parents share: how to get your kids to eat. Invariably, it’s some random concoction that’s made up random ingredients that aren’t quite traditional, but it works; in essence, it’s a childhood variant of fusion fare.
For Kinx Cafe’s co-owner Tina Hoang, it’s also the foundation of their “modern-ish Asian menu” which is “inspired by the food that we grew up with and food that we love to cook and eat.”.
Here you’ll find cafe classics reimagined such as the betel leaf burger, District 3 pasta, pho-glazed ribs and their uber-popular rice and noodle bowls.
“It’s delicious food with a balance of everything,” Tina says.
In tough times, that balance also has to include a heavy dose of optimism.
“In every crisis there are opportunities … to learn and to adapt to these new normal times,” she says.
“We just need to stay together and stay positive.”

KURO
At Kuro, a layered bar with a fine-dining experience, there is an obvious nod to Japanese culture; from the food to the design, it’s all done with precision. In light of current circumstances, though, it’s had to make a few adjustments.
“Using the ingredients, we currently have on the menu, we have created some takeaway-friendly options, not your usual Japanese takeaway food,” executive chef and co-owner Taka Teramoto says.
“The offerings are much more casual … than what we normally do but they still use the top ingredients that we usually serve for Kuro Bar and Dining.”
The special takeaway menu includes such things as burgers, curries, sushi rolls and gourmet, easy-to-prepare meals.
They’re also doing takeaway cocktails and about to launch “Kuro at Home”, easy to prepare meals you can cook at home with a step-by-step guide. Swing by to pick-up your order, and you’ll save an extra 10 per cent.

MORETTI RISTORANTE PIZZERIA
It takes something special for a restaurant to stay around for more than 20 years, but it takes something exceptional to remain a mainstay of Italian food in Sydney’s own Little Italy.
But Moretti’s has been doing just that, and even though the dining area is vacant, they’re still preparing their full menu for takeaway and delivery.
Try a Roman-style pizza, rich tomato-based pasta or something a bit lighter but still satisfying, the Spaghetti Allo Scoglio – white wine, garlic, extra-virgin oils and chilli with prawns, vongole and mussels.
“We are grateful that we are permitted to remain open,” Moretti’s owner, Ilario Ventolini, says.
“It’s a time to ensure the survival of our team and our business and be ready to bounce back when this is ultimately all over.”

SHOW NEUA THAI STREET FOOD
Send our tastebuds on a trip to Northern Thailand with a menu featuring some traditional dishes found on the streets of Chang Mai, the largest city in the mountainous regions of Northern Thailand.
Rather than the ubiquitous seafood and coconut-centric dishes found on most Thai menus, these are quite hearty.
Probably the most popular dish is the Khao Soi, a red curry broth with egg and chicken, topped with r nest of deep-fried noodles, red onion, pickled veg and lime.
Other favourites include Kanom Jeen Nam Ngeaw, spicy pork bone broth with rice vermicelli, pork blood curd and meat bone pork, served with fresh bean sprouts, dry chilli, and pickled cabbage on the side or the fried baby clams with Thai herbs and chillies.
