Chia seeds are packed with nutrients and antioxidants, which is why they’re the perfect way to get your day off to a great start. Our nutritionist Chrissy Freer says: “Chia seeds are a great way to boost your daily fibre intake and this is essential for optimal gut health and related to the reduced number of chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers.” Stir them through this creamy parfait for a quick and easy brunch the whole family will enjoy.

2. Mexican

The Mexican trend is showing no signs of slowing down – and these days, it extends to breakfast and brunch. Create a mid-morning flavour fiesta with this fiery mince and baked eggs combo… or, if you’re short on time, try these quick and easy muffins.

Mex' it up

3. French toast

Bring a retro brunch, like French toast, back into fashion with a few gourmet tweaks. You could use a good-quality fruit bread rather than a plain loaf to give it a retro spin. Another option is sandwiching it with fruit – we love to dip two pieces of bread in a mixture of sweetened mascarpone, before filling with beautiful black cherries. Keeping the sandwich intact, dip it into the egg and milk mix before frying. And then there’s also the trusty air fryer – we love these air fryer French toast fingers.

4. Sweet potato

Sweet potatoes contain folate and dietary fibre, are an excellent source of beta carotene and vitamin C, and are also a good source of vitamin E. We love this sweet potato breakfast hash – it’s super filling, impressive and delicious. At the weekend, spoil yourself with these pancakes.

5. Hash

Yes, hash is no longer something that Nana used to make in the 70s. It’s actually the ultimate easy way to cook – and you can bulk it out with affordable ingredients. Go bigger and better with this hash brown tray bake that will satisfy even the biggest appetites. Everyone will be sure to accept these bacon roses, which are filled with wilted spinach and baked eggs.

6. Doughnuts

Doughnuts often go in and out of fashion. Although enjoying them as dessert is SO 2017, we’re now seeing them popping up as a breakfast or brunch item. We love these free-form doughnut bites for morning tea or brunch. Don’t forget to serve mugs of hot chocolate for sneaky doughnut dipping!

7. Freekeh

Freekeh is the most underrated super grain that has been snacking onto all the trendiest restaurant menus over the last few years – but now, it’s more readily available in supermarkets too. Freekeh is wheat that is picked while still green, then roasted. Compared to regular wheat, freekeh contains higher levels of protein and dietary fibre, as well as calcium, potassium, iron and zinc. Try it in this satisfying brunch salad with beetroot and dukkah-rolled eggs.

8. Skewers

No longer reserved for the Easter show, we’re bringing finger food on a stick back to the brunch table with these fun skewers. Thread the skewers with mini pancakes, fresh fruit and small rounds of fruit toast for a sweet treat that will make you the ‘toast’ of the town.

Stick 'em up

9. Jam

Store-bought jams in jars has been extremely popular in 2024, but we’re also seeing more people making jam from scratch at home. This simple raspberry jam requires no special ingredients and is made in the microwave in less than 15 minutes. Smother it generously on a slice of fruit toast for the ultimate brunch indulgence.

10. Bowls

Acai bowls were huge back in 2018, then smoothie bowls took over. Fast forward a few years past buddha bowls, bircher muesli bowls, baked oats and overnight oats and now, anything goes! Bowls of all kinds are firmly on all brunch menus  and most of them are really nutritious. This one is packed with protein and fibre, but tastes like a decadent dessert.
