An influencer has been slammed for the “crazy” dress she wore to a friend’s wedding on the weekend.
Chelsea Parke, an American content creator and founder of up-market clothing label, Parke, shared photos on her Instagram of the event, where she donned a see-through brown dress.
Ms Parke posed alongside her fiance, who sported a classic black and white tuxedo, indicating that it was a black tie event.
The influencer, on the other hand, chose a sheer sequined slip dress, which she wore over a delicate bralette and high-waisted underwear, putting her midriff on full display.
“Had my eye on this for a while,” she said of the $640 Jacques Wei Draped Tulle Dress.
Ms Parke’s followers were quick to comment that it was inappropriate to wear something like that to a wedding.
“People have really lost the idea of what black tie is,” said one user.
“Why is she wearing a sheer curtain over her bra and underwear?” someone else asked.
“This is crazy,” a third claimed.
And a different follower admitted, “I’m sorry, that is in SUCH poor taste.”
“She looks so out of place,” remarked another commenter.
While many outright said they wouldn’t wear the dress to such a formal occasion, others were adamant they’d never wear the dress at all.
“Personally, I wouldn’t wear it anywhere,” wrote one.
“Or wear it at all …” added another.
“Why would you wear this? Hideous,” another snarked.
“It’s ugly and inappropriate,” yet another Instagrammer chimed in.
However, among the hate, there were a few people who supported Ms Parke’s attire.
“Perfection,” one person praised.
“I kind of love it,” revealed a second.
Ms Parke is yet to address the backlash. News.com.au has reached out to her for comment.
The social media star paired the unconventional gown with $750 strappy heels from Aquazzura and a $1,090 black leather handbag from Moda Operandi.
She was inspired to launch her own fashion brand after she struggled to find “classic and timeless” pieces for her wardrobe, Forbes reported.
From 2022 to 2023, Parke increased sales from $100,000 to an astounding $1 million and credited much of her brand’s success to her 200,000 social media followers.
Aussie influencer cops backlash for wedding guest dress choice
It comes after Aussie influencer Kat Clark also divided her followers by wearing a white floral dress to her friend’s wedding.
The 38-year-old social media star was “shocked” when people started calling her dress “disrespectful” as she didn’t think it was a controversial choice at all.
“Kat! Why are you wearing a white dress when the bride is wearing a white dress? Isn’t that a bit disrespectful,” commented one person.
“White dress?” another asked.
“Is nobody going to talk about how she’s wearing white?” another reply read.
However, others argued it was fine because the colourful floral print took up the majority of the dress.
Ms Clark later shared screenshots of text messages from the bride herself, who confirmed she was unbothered by the dress.
