Emily in Paris’ debut season did not exactly draw praise for the French-ness of its wardrobe (exhibit A: the infamous Eiffel Tower blouse), but what it lacked in authenticity, it made up for in fun. What else could we have expected from renowned costume designer Patricia Field, whose intrepid eye for colour made Carrie Bradshaw a cultural icon? In the seasons since, the Netflix hit has brimmed with memorable outfits—Lily Collins as the titular, exceedingly American Emily working out in a Chanel crop top, a bevy of berets and Dior newsboy caps, and an Audrey Hepburn-inspired black gown.
“My thing is just to make my actors happy, and for them to be interesting and original instead of trendy,” Field said once of her distinct approach to InStyle, one aided by costumer Marylin Fitoussi. “I have a tendency of making up these outfits that are not necessarily something you've seen before, but still hold some interest. Because that's what lasts in a wardrobe, it really does.”
This year, with the coming of Emily in Paris’ saison quatre, we’ll be getting more of Fitoussi’s wonderfully eccentric sleight of hand; Field has since transitioned to a consulting stylist for the show. Already, we’ve had our first glimpses of Collins in full costume, decked out in faux furs and coloured leathers that defy the minimalist sensibility (and Emily’s marketing income, but that’s part of the fantasy), as well as her equally stylist (or some might argue, better-dressed) peers, including Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu’s Sylvie Grateau, and Camille Razat’s Camille in arms cuffs and layered singlets. So sought-after was the cast’s wardrobe in season one that Viacom, parent company of Emily in Paris producer MTV, released a limited collection of luxury merch featured on the show in celebration of the show’s second chapter, so you could shop the clothes right off the screen.
But you know us—when it comes to fashion, we’re impatient little things, and we’re willing to bet that you are too. So, before we rendezvous with Collins’s Emily for the fourth time around, we’ve crawled the net for the pieces we’ve spotted from the teasers and promotional stills. Some, like Emily’s yellow Silvia Tcherassi clutch, are instantly recognisable—but others, like a beaded bag from Germanier and Maison Michel sailor caps, are delightful discoveries.
