The when, who and where of the most exciting week in the local fashion calendar.

May, the fashion calendar’s month of months, is on the steady approach, and bringing with it that spate of events that makes it so memorable: the annual Met Gala on the first Monday, and, of course, Australian Fashion Week (AFW), nipping at its heels.

In 2024, AFW will take place from May 13 to 17. IMG, the owner and operator of the international trade event, announced the dates in partnership with Destination NSW last week, along with the Australian Fashion Laureate, to be staged in November next year. The five-day resort schedule attracts approximately 33,000 attendees annually, from industry figures and celebrities to members of the media, consumers and buyers. “We are thrilled to announce this calendar of Australian fashion events for 2024,” says Natalie Xenita, vice president-managing director of IMG fashion events and properties in the Asia-Pacific.

“Fashion Weeks are connected by a worldwide consumer, and we are committed to innovating and leveraging our resources to support the industry, while amplifying talent on a global stage. Our continued partnership with Destination NSW will create further opportunities for Australian designers to showcase their creativity whilst igniting growth in our country's creative and retail industries.”

It’s a partnership that permits IMG to waive designer participation fees for AFW 2024, as well as bring back the week’s series of integrated consumer offerings, which range from tickets to expert panels, and runway shows at Sydney’s Carriageworks. An investment in the future of local fashion shines too in AFW’s Next Gen program, presented by DHL, a prize given to four up-and-coming designers valued at over $100,000.

In 2023, Ruby Pedder, Cameron Hill, Liandra Gaykamangu and Xixi Wu followed in the footsteps of previous winners Anna Quan, Bec + Bridge and Camilla and Marc by presenting their collections on the catwalk; 2024 will see judges such as Adam Baidawi, GQ’s deputy editorial director and British GQ’s head of editorial content, Alice Birrell, Vogue Australia’s fashion features director, Vogue contributor Luke Leitch, and Mob in Fashion founder Nathan McGuire determine the newest names to know.

Though the full schedule for Australian Fashion Week resort 2025 has yet to be announced, it has been confirmed that Carla Zampatti, led by creative director Karlie Ungar, will be returning to the program.
