ASHTON Weston has a skill for solving problems.

“I’ve always had a keen interest in playing around with electronics,” the 17-year-old Cairns school student says.

“My mum has never been too skilled with electronics so I learned to do most of the technical side of things around the house for her and found I liked it and went into it with more depth and detail.”

Nowadays, Ashton is aiming to solve problems for others in his local community.

After noticing how hard it is to keep track of bees in his family’s handful of hobby beehives, Ashton has started developing a smart phone application that he hopes will benefit commercial beekeepers.

“Some beekeepers have several hundred hives so that’s a lot of information to try and keep on top of,” he explains. “The basic idea is to have a simple notebook app that will function as a way to input and store information on every hive. Beekeepers would then be able to search out the hive they want and access it later on.”

Once it’s fully developed and on the market, Ashton’s application is expected revolutionise the way beekeepers manage their swarms.

For now though CommBank’s Australian of the Day is focused on completing his HSC with enough marks to study at James Cook University. Beyond that, the sky’s the limit. “I’m also very interested in circuitry and my end goal is to have my own company producing bits of technology,” he says. “I get excited by possibility; especially the possibility of making inventions that will help other people out and make lives easier.”

CommBank has partnered with News Corp Australia to champion the Australian of the Day initiative which celebrates people in our neighbourhoods and communities who really make a difference to how we live and who we are.
