THE shooting of Darren Neill is the latest incident to place police under intense scrutiny following four civilian deaths involving officers in one week.
Four critical incident investigations are under way following the deaths in separate incidents around the city.
An elderly woman was killed during a collision with a police car on Meredith St, Bankstown, about 12.45pm on Wednesday.Police were driving to an urgent job with lights and sirens on and the woman is believed to have been reversing out of a driveway. She died at the scene.
The next incident occurred two days later when a man jumped from the Cahill Expressway about 1.40am last Friday. Police were responding to reports a man was trying to climb over the safety fence on the eastern side of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Officers said he ran as they approached him. He then climbed over the handrail and jumped, landing on Alfred St below. He could not be revived.
Brazilian Roberto Laudisio Curti, 21, died after being tasered three times by police on March 18. The student reportedly stole biscuits from a convenience store in King St in the city and he was chased by officers, who tasered him, causing fatal injuries.
On Sunday afternoon, yet another critical incident investigation began after Neill was shot by a senior officer in Westfield Parramatta.
Critical incident investigations are initiated following events where police are involved in a fatality.
Officers attached to a different local area command investigate the circumstances.
NSW Police said the inquiries were continuing: "In the case of critical incidents where a death has occurred there is the additional element of accountability and transparency by way of an inquest conducted by the NSW Coroner."
