THERE'S no doubt that we have it pretty lucky when it comes to our humble little island home – a sunburnt treasure, with an enviable minimum wage, a tonne of job opportunities and a relatively good work-life balance. But we’re not really geographically close to much else are we?

Want a career that could take you around the world? We’ve teamed up with TAFE NSW to explore the interesting careers that can take you there.

We love our Kiwi neighbours, and sipping on cocktails in Bali is always a fun escape from the nine to five burn, but it’s a far cry from grabbing a London-to-Paris bus for a weekend, or cruising through Route 66 for a bucket-list American road trip.

Living and working overseas is a bit of a holy grail, often something that seems more like a pipe dream than a reality. But with visas easier for us to claim than ever before, these jobs and industries can take you all over the globe pretty quickly. (And make sure you check out these job sites for all of the different positions available overseas!)

Health Care

Health care is in big demand globally, and especially in the countries like the United States. As a whole, it is the highest growing industry according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and a tonne of jobs are expected to pop up in the next few years. Registered nurses and nursing assistants are particularly sought after, with big increases in medical needs across the board. Similarly, home health care is just as important globally, with aged-care requiring continuous attention.

Types of jobs: Nursing, Nursing Assistant, Physiotherapist, Home Health Aide, Home Care Aides.

Digital Marketing & Advertising

If you’re already in the media industry here in Australia, you’re in luck. And if you’re not, there are plenty of options to get your skills up to scratch. Digital Marketing and Advertising has seen eight years of successful growth in the UK, meaning there are huge overseas opportunities up for grabs. You should really start packing your bags if you’ve got a decent set of content marketing skills up your sleeve, with big things predicted for jobs in this space.

Audio-visual content creation in particular is in ridiculous demand, as businesses look to increase their online and mobile presence.

Types of jobs: Content Producer, Video Producer, Marketing Manager, Marketing Assistant, SEO Analyst, Social Media Coordinator.

Data & Research

With data at the forefront of society for both good and bad reasons of late, there has been a strong increase in companies stocking up. With greater online presence, businesses are looking for employees to both collate and find data, as well as making sure it is tight and secure. So if you fancy yourself at doing the hard yards behind the data, or making sure all of the info is locked away super well, it’s probably time to start sending in some job applications.

Types of jobs: Data Analyst, Research Analyst, Data Processing Officer, Data Strategist.

Education

It’s an industry that is always going to be in demand overseas, especially if fluent English is part of your resume. The dreary weather in the UK has seen large numbers of qualified British teachers head overseas, in search for a warmer lifestyle. Their loss may be your gain, with many parts of Europe looking to fill voids in education – specifically in primary and secondary teaching. With Brexit also looming large on the radar for many in the UK, it’s a prime opportunity to start applying for some working visas.

Australia is already pretty well represented in terms of expat teachers overseas, and vast parts of Europe continue to have a shortage.

Types of jobs: Teachers Aide, Primary Teacher, Secondary Teacher.

Office Admin

Now, you might not have pictured yourself moving to New York to become a receptionist, but all you need is that foot in the door. With new business and startups booming more than ever globally, naturally the need for admin staff is also very high. And look at it this way, the journey alone to a new country will provide you with the motivation and energy. And sooner than you know it, you’ll be climbing that professional ladder to the top.

And hey, you might even find a secret passion for something like Human Resources, Recruitment or Sales.

Types of jobs: Customer Services Support, Recruitment Coordinator, Receptionist, Payroll Administrator.

Information And Communications Technology

There are some big skill gaps in ICT overseas – with over 180,000 industry jobs set to be unfilled next year in countries like Canada alone. Taking advantage of skill gaps is hugely important, and this is one of them. Not only is the demand there, but ICT is also a well paying industry with various roles across the field. And naturally positions are required across almost every other industry, meaning there should always be opportunities.

Types of jobs: Computer Programmer, Software Engineer, Data Administrator, Information Systems.

Digital Tech

It’s a brilliant time to be handy with practical coding, software and digital skills. With companies around the world expanding into fields like artificial intelligence, augmented reality and software writing, jobs are popping up everywhere. If you especially don’t want to venture too far abroad, Asia is a popular option for jobs in this space. Singapore is seeing a bit of a skills gap, but it’s highly competitive so make sure you don’t miss that boat. And you don’t have to be naturally talented with coding skills, with a range of courses available (both online and in person) to help make that application look extra shiny.

Types of jobs: Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Front/Back End Developer, Full Stack Developer.
