PARENTS sick of pester power want the Government to outlaw toys being used to sell fast food to kids and there are signs the Federal Government might be listening.
Characters from movies such as Shrek, Toy Story, Monsters vs Aliens, Madagascar, Batman and Ben 10 are used to market foods which are high in salt, fat and sugar.
Parents have had enough. A survey released yesterday by the Cancer Council found 91 per cent of consumers were sick of sneaky tactics used by food marketers and want better regulation to protect children.
More than half of the 800 adults surveyed want the Government to bring in a total ban.
The results come as a government inquiry issued warned the fast food industry last week to bring in stringent self-regulation.
The House of Representatives committee inquiry into obesity recommended further research into the effect of advertising of food with poor nutritional value to children.
The committee was bombarded with research from the nation's top obesity experts detailing the link between using toys to advertise unhealthy food and children's consumption of such food.
"The industry codes and initiatives do not prevent the marketing techniques," Obesity Policy Coalition adviser Jane Martin said.
