As a celebrity trainer, is it different to work with famous people over regular people?

AIt’s always been a goal of mine to work with celebrities and high profile people because they have stressful lifestyles and a lot of restraints.

They are generally people that are constantly in the limelight and for whom body image and mental health is a big thing because they’re out in front of a big audience and judged on every facet of their lifestyles. That’s really interesting to work with.

Can you tell us some of the people you have worked with?

I have trained (Seven newsreader) Talitha Cummins since she had her first baby and she’s now revealed she is expecting another. I have also worked with (Ten newsreader) Jessica Bowditch throughout her recent pregnancy. (Her clients also include Sunrise’s Mark Beretta and Canadian singer-songwriter Kai.)

You grew up swimming and reached a national level. What do you think about when you stare at that black line at the bottom of the pool lap after lap?

Back when I was a teenager, that black line was a big part of my life! I would sing songs in my head. These days I use that time to think creatively and … just clear my head.

It seems exercise and fitness have always been a big part of your life, did you always want to be a fitness trainer?

No, not at all. I grew up on a cotton farm in Queensland and I always thought I would stay on the farm. I’d go out and check the crops with the agronomist all the time and there was a time when out of me and my two brothers, I would have picked me to be the one to stay on the farm.

Do you miss country life?

I feel like I live a pinch-me lifestyle in Sydney and I love what I do, but the country will always be home for me. It’s the place I go back to refuel. I’m a country girl at heart.

You work closely with your clients on their fitness goals but also sometimes their mental health. How do they inspire you?

My clients truly are my biggest inspiration. I find athletes really motivate me, but dealing with people in everyday situations is another kind of inspiring. I’m working with a run club to take 50 people over to the New York Marathon in November. One of these guys training in that has been in and out of rehab. To see him achieving when he has overcome something so big, is a huge inspiration to me.

You’ve been an athlete all your life, does that mean training every day is like second nature to you?

Just like everyone else, I have those mornings when the thought of training is enough to make me want to cry. When I feel like this I try to come up with three reasons why I should get up and train and three reasons why I shouldn’t. The positive always wins out. My best tactic is to get up and get straight into it, that way it’s done before you can make up an excuse not to do it.

And do you have a favourite cheat meal?

My ultimate go-to treat is ice cream and Messina in particular.

You have said you’ll always find a way to exercise no matter where you are, is that true?

I was flying to London once and had a stopover in Abu Dhabi. I’d been on the flight for 12 hours and needed to move, so I pulled out my skipping rope and used that in a corner of the passenger lounge. I got a few funny stares but I felt so much better for it. Another time I was on a long haul flight and again I felt the need to move a bit, so I did push ups and squats in the aisle near the service area. The flight attendants were great about it.
