The list of secret Hollywood stars who call Melbourne home or grew up in the southern capital continues to grow, furthering the city’s reputation as a creative hotbed.
Kylie Minogue, Eric Bana and Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush are based in Melbourne and the likes of Academy Award nominated actor Guy Pearce, screen great Cate Blanchett and Rachel Griffiths maintain strong ties to the city.
However, there are many others making their mark in film, TV and music that Melbourne and Victoria can proudly lay claim to.
The secret is out, Melbourne might not be Hollywood but it is, or has been, home for stars of some of the biggest international shows and films in recent years.
Jacob Elordi
Yes, Jacob Elordi was born in Brisbane, but Melbourne has played a big part in his story. Elordi moved with his family to Melbourne from Brisbane when he was young and was based here for four years. During that time he attended St Kevin’s College, played junior basketball with the Melbourne Tigers and won the youth category in the Fashions On The Field competition at Flemington Racecourse in 2012. Elordi has recently finished filming the movie adaptation of Wuthering Heights alongside Margot Robbie and also features in a Chanel ad campaign with her. His other work included Priscilla, The Narrow Road To The Deep North, Saltburn, The Kissing Booth and Euphoria.
Sarah Snook
The Golden Globe, Emmy, Tony and AACTA award-winning actor was born in Adelaide and grew up in South Australia, but she calls an inner Melbourne suburb and country Victoria home with her husband, Dave Lawson. Snook is best known for playing Shiv Roy in Succession and wowing Broadway with her performance in The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Rose
Rose (aka Roseanne Park) is currently one of the world’s biggest music stars. A K-pop superstar, whose career was launched via the group Blackpink, Rose was born in New Zealand but moved with her family to Melbourne in 2004, aged 7. She attended Kew East Primary School and Canterbury Girls Secondary College before moving to South Korea in 2012.
Bella Heathcote
Bella Heathcote was born in Melbourne and attended Korowa Anglican Girls’ School in Glen Iris. She has appeared in Neighbours, alongside Sylvester Stallone in Tulsa King and will soon be seen in the ABC series The Family Next Door.
Elizabeth Debicki
Golden Globe winner Elizabeth Debicki was born in Paris and moved to Melbourne with her parents when she was five. She grew up in Glen Waverley, attended Huntingtower School in Mount Waverley and studied drama at the Victorian College of the Arts. She famously played Princess Diana in the Netflix series The Crown.
Angourie Rice
Angourie Rice is a regular at opening nights of top tier Melbourne theatre shows but the influencers and social media fabulous nobodies who flood those events for selfie opportunities rarely seem to realise a real star is in their midst. Rice was born in Sydney and moved to Melbourne during her childhood. It remains her base. Her film roles have included Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Mean Girls. She also appeared in the series Mare of Easttown.
Felix Mallard
Born in Footscray, Felix Mallard is a name to watch. He made his acting debut in 2014, taking over the role of Ben Kirk in Neighbours. He has gone on to feature in the Netflix horror series Locke & Key, the musical comedy-drama series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and the Netflix dramedy Ginny & Georgia. He is currently filming the series Goolagong in Melbourne.
Ben Mendelsohn
Ben Mendelsohn’s Hollywood career had a late start but the actor has built an impressive track record of major film roles. Born in Melbourne, he has appeared in the Apple+ series The New Look, and film Captain Marvel, Rogue One, The Dark Knight Rises, Animal Kingdom and Australia.
Emilie du Ravin
Growing up on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula, Emilie du Ravin has enjoyed significant success in major US TV shows including Lost, Roswell and Once Upon A Time.
Xavier Samuel
The Twilight Saga films Eclipse and Breaking Dawn - Part 2 shot Xavier Samuel to fame in the early 2000s. Born in Hamilton in country Victoria, Samuel grew up in South Australia. He has appeared in the film Elvis and the TV series Apple Cider Vinegar, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and The Clearing.
Chris Pang
Crazy Rich Asians star Chris Pang was born in Melbourne. Pang’s father is Barry Pang, a martial arts instructor who established the Barry Pang School in 1974. Pang went to school at Scotch College. His father was a part-owner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente.
Christopher Chung
Success keeps coming for Christopher Chung. Having been nominated for a BAFTA for his work in the British series Slow Horses, Chung is now filming the Netflix series My Brilliant Career in South Australia. Chung grew up in Melbourne’s Mount Eliza and attended Padua College. He tried out for reality shows like Popstars, Australian Idol and The X Factor and appeared in one episode of Neighbours. His career breakthrough came when he was cast as Roddy Ho on Slow Horses. .
Olivia DeJonge
Olivia DeJonge hit the big time when she was cast as Priscilla Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley’s biopic Elvis. DeJonge was born in Melbourne and continues to be a visitor to the city.
Travis Fimmel
Having first made his name internationally as a Calvin Klein model in the early 2000s, Travis Fimmel is now an established actor. His work in the Netflix drama series Boy Swallows Universe was brilliant. Fimmel grew up on a dairy farm in Lockington in northern Victoria and tried out for the St Kilda Football Club before modelling and then acting came his way.
Kelly Gale
Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated model turned actor Kelly Gale lived in Melbourne with her family between the ages of two and four. Married to actor Joel Kinnaman, Gale has swapped modelling for acting.
Felix Cameron
The young star of the Netflix’s series Boy Swallows Universe was born in Melbourne and lives with his family in the Macedon Ranges.
Flea
The Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ bassist Flea, aka Michael Balzary, was born in Melbourne in 1962. He moved with his family to New York aged 4.
Troye Sivan
Singer, actor, influencer, songwriter and cultural force, Troye Sivan, calls an inner Melbourne suburb home. Sivan was born in South Africa but moved with his parents to Australia when he was two. They first settled in Perth and then eventually moved to Melbourne.
Abbey Lee Kershaw
The daughter of Kim Kershaw who played for Richmond and Hawthorn in the VFL, Abbey Lee Kershaw has enjoyed a tremendously successful career as an international model. In recent years she has made a move into acting with roles in Mad Max: Fury Road, Gods Of Egypt and The Forgiven. She grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Kensington and attended St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in North Melbourne.

No list of Melbourne acting talent is complete without the Hemsworth brothers being included. Chris, Liam and Luke grew up on Phillip Island but are now based in the Byron Bay area. Chris remains a loyal Western Bulldogs supporter.
